What's the Rose You Most Desire That You Can't Have?
Comments (74)Musaboru, I have 3 Wedding Cake roses on their own root from Burlington. I was warned that they probably wouldn't do as well on their own root as grafted but I wanted the own root anyway. I probably ordered them two years ago, got them 9 months later, potted them up in one gallon (they were very tiny) and had to wait another year before they were big enough to put in the ground. So far, they are doing OK. They still are small (less than 2 feet tall and less than a foot wide) but I think they will do better their second year in the ground. That said, they handle the heat well and have interesting color variations on the flowers depending on how long they have been on the plant. I get lots of compliments on them. If they were bigger, I would send you cuttings. I have had very good luck with cuttings from Ralph Moore roses. Lavendar Crystal is one of my favorites. Just stick a cane in the ground and it will grow. Love that rose. It is a beauty....See MoreThe Historian -Discussion with Spoilers
Comments (83)just joined discussion wanted to say a couple of things; agreed with many others, although contrived in many ways, enjoyed book very much, read twice. has anyone seen the wikipedia page on DHAMPYRES which are decendents of a union of vampires and humans? these beings are described as having qualities that could describe helen and her daughter; including making good vampire hunters. also re. the end of the book. it is abosolutely necessary for a big question mark to hand over what did and didnt happen to dracua or his curse. there is a great 60s film by roman polanski called ' the fearless vampire killers' or 'dance of the vampires' watch this all the way through - laughs and all but watch all the way to the very end - you get that same feeling. genniwren...See MoreAttention Rose Lovers Near Tyler, Texas
Comments (23)I will get a photo of it this afternoon. It doesnt look like yours - Junior, the guy who was in charge of sales that day, said it was a "seedling" - maybe one Certified was thinking of introducing but didnt/hasnt. It looks like a small Double Delight - right now, the blooms have faded into a reddish looking color. When it first opened, it was a beautiful lipstick red/white. Bloom size almost looked like a big miniflora and it is covered in blooms. Going outside now, so will get a photo posted soon. Have not seen anything like this one - I am pretty good at identifying most of the time. Junior told me that my Medallion was Oldtimer, but I knew it wasnt that.......wasnt dark enough. It didnt come into full bloom until just a few days ago and all I had to go on was a pale apricot bud. Glad we went when we did - at those prices and with the quality of roses, they will go fast! Think I may call next week and see what they have. Last year, they said they would open back up in September but they never did, so its hard to predict when they will open and how long they will stay open. They had only one Shirley's Bouquet - I bought that one as an unknown at the Nacogdoches Flea Market a few weeks ago for $10 - it is a gorgeous white - if you dont have it, get it! Blooms are the most beautiful white and stay on the bush a long time. My friend got the one Certified had. Since it was named for Shirley Staples, their president, am sure they will have more. Did they happen to say to you how long they would be doing this sale?...See MoreMy experience with buying roses online
Comments (46)MNDutch RoseGuy Thank you for the fantastic report on nurseries, I never buy from Edmunds roses after googling "The scoop on .. name of nursery", this gives customers' reviews on any nursery. https://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/c/123/0/ How do you like the own-roots bought from Roses Unlimited this summer sale? Nurseries that I bought own-root roses from are: Regan, Burlington, Heirloom, Chamblee's, High Country Roses, Roses Unlimited. Right now I'm debating if I should buy State of Grace for $16 from Northland Rosarium ... shipping charge is $20 for 2 roses, but Andrew is excellent in customer service. Della Reese is wimpy as grafted-on-Dr.Huey (got from local Menards store for $6 as bare-root). It didn't even flower for 1st year, so I killed it. Grafted-on-Dr.Huey declines drastically after 2nd-year in my zone 5, so I no longer buy grafted-on-Dr.Huey unless it's flowering lots in a pot at local store. Very happy with the 6 roses I bought from Roses Unlimited this June 2020 summer sale, they are 3 times taller than the 4 bands I got from High Country Roses late May 2020. The bands from High Country Roses are so short that they got eaten by bunnies this fall. For dense & thick and alkaline clay like mine, just a bare-stick Dr.Huey-roostock doesn't sprout roots well, even when bought from Regan Nursery, such as Young Lycidas (grafted-on-Dr.Huey) died through its first zone 5 winter. The blooming power of 3 own-roots roses (large bare-sticks) from Regan Nursery is less than the blooming power of 3 own-roots roses (in pots) from Roses Unlimited. In the past decade of buying 130 own-root varieties, I find that alfalfa meal is a must for growth-hormone, it's worth making a special trip to the feed-store for a 40 lb. bag of alfalfa meal to mix with potting soil or to top my clay. Roses Unlimited recommends mixing 2 cups of alfalfa meal or 1 cup Mills Magic Rose Mix in the planting hole. Below is a tiny band of Crimson Glory (bought from Burlington) producing 4 bud/blooms after 1 month of purchase, fertilized with alfalfa meal....See MoreBenT (NorCal 9B Sunset 14)
