Paw paw seedlings or cuttings

I was told that these are seed-grown paw paw seedlings, which is important since pawpaws need to be cross

pollinated by genetically distinct trees in order to fruit. I think they are cuttings because they seem to be uniformly thick with sprouts spread out for 2/3 of their length. What do you think? Do I now have 20 clones?!

And if they came with instructions to plant at the same depth, does that mean I need 10 inch deep pots??

here is a link to photo page of my state's tree nursery. I suppose all states have something similar. This gives you an idea of how millions of tree seedlings are grown, we call them bed-grown seedling liners. No reason to grow them from cuttings, AAMOF I've never heard of growing pawpaw from cuttings. BTW shipping has come to a halt because bare root season is just about over.

FWIW pawpaw is blooming at this moment, flowers smell like bread dough. I use a small artist brush and transfer pollen from tree to tree, otherwise no fruit.

No, you don't need 10 in pots because the roots weren't positioned in the soil like you see now, but were much more spread out/horizontal.

Looks to be some kind of tap root?

eta: 5 gal. pails would do it. Drill drainage holes of course.

If you really want seedlings, just plant some pawpaw seeds. They can take a long time (months) to pop up, so don't give up on them too soon if you do plant some seeds next year. Also, if you are going to do that, let us know and we can provide more tips. However, if you are wanting to plant pawpaws for the fruit, consider buying some grafted cultivars. You'll likely get much better tasting/quality fruit if you pick the right ones. Nolin River Nut Tree Nursery is a good, local source for those.

If this is their first summer since transplant I think I'd be inclined to let them do whatever and then cut them back next year. I'm no expert on Paw Paws though so hopefully some others will chime in. Nice to see that your having success with the suckers. I started mine from seed a couple years ago and they are still only about a foot tall. I'm hoping this will be their summer.

I would think seedlings that size would have much more of a root system.

Asimina is propagated through seed and named cultivars through grafting. Cuttings are almost impossible. What you see at the pictures above are typical seedlings.

Asimina triloba is sensitive to root disturbance. I don't know how well young seedlings can be transplanted. Asimina is best planted at its definitive place and not be transplanted.

I prefer pot grown seedlings PROVIDED that these are grown in deep pots ('oak pots' etc.) and are NOT pot bound.
