Bonsai need special care such as root trimming and regular fertilization. They also need lots of light (generally outside light) and almost daily watering. I have had a number of bonsai, and I have lost a few of them. Unless it is a decidious tree and just hasn't greened up for spring, it is probably dead. Sorry for your loss. Dee

You can let it grow this season without topping it but next season you can top it at the height you intend to keep it. If you're concerned that it won't form branches below the current top you can take off about six inches from the top at about tight cluster to bloom. This will encourage lower branching, but you'll want about 4' between tier scaffolds that are similarly oriented direction-wise, unless it's on something less vigorous than M7.

I would really like to know the outcome of your gardenia. I have the same problem...my self watering also failed. I have some remaining green leaves on about 1/4 of my plant. I Cut it back serverly about two weeks ago. Still no new growth. I've had this plant for about 60 years. It lives year round in a heated greenhouse. It made it through a freeze about three years ago so am hoping it will survive this trauma.

Hi gardengal48, thanks for the reply. The wet bark is because I'd just sprayed it with the hose while watering our herb garden a few minutes before I took the photos. When the trees were planted in May 2013 they were brought burlapped ... and that was removed when they put it in the hole. They amended the soil with Mycorrhizal fungi which you can kind of see in this photo: I think it was probably this stuff. Keep in mind that was all 4 years ago. The tree seemed to establish easily and well, and grew beautifully. By last September (2016) it looked great: And it continued that way through October 2016 when it dropped all its leaves: But this Spring was a different story. The other maple that was planted at the same time leafed out nicely, and this one did not. Something definitely must've happened over the winter. Sorry I don't have a better photo of the trunk at the moment ... Thanks again for any thoughts you might have about cause, and potentially saving the tree.

As you know it doesn't look great. Any sign of blackening im the trunk or branches?

Fornsome hope, I had a Metasequoia 90% defoliate back in the drought of 2012. It recovered. Now if there is no obvious one time reason like drought or frost I would worry more.

Functionally if there isbno obviois damage I would probably wait to see if it releafs. Maybe June? July?

It's leafing out...it's not dead..

Big city name... did you get a late frost?

Fast spring growth can look weird because it's growing so fast...be patient...

If bad frost...high odds it can releaf...

Fert is not a response to cold stress...or any other stress...just water properly

That's not normal leafing out. The petioles are drooping and the leaves aren't folded. They're shrivelled.

If the maple tree is receiving adequate water, maple wilt may be a possible cause of the condition of the leaves.

If worthwhile to you, consult with an arborist to diagnose the issue.
