Best grass for Los Angeles?
Comments (91)Adrienne in Thousand Oaks: Regarding UC Verde Buffalo Grass, we installed it June 2021 so can attest to how it took watering twice a day to establish, then less frequently until we were watering twice a week with good results; I live in Thousand Oaks and were restricted to watering once a week for 15 minutes which was a good soak and it survived the limited watering last summer. When first planted as plugs we had a lot of weeds but it eventually filled in and is very thick. What we don't like is that is it dormant and brown in color from November to March; it has been slowly turning green in the last few weeks now that it is spring. It requires very little mowing, about once a month at most from spring to fall. The only way to buy it in Southern California is from FloraSource Ltd. They ship it as plugs in flats so it is labor intensive to have it installed; cost is twice that of sod....See MoreBest grass for kids yard in Los Angeles area
Comments (4)the best grass these days is actually a native groundcover... it goes by many names but is most commonly called Kurapia. Great for dogs, soccer, doesn't need to be mowed and only watered once a week (or less in winter). I'm a professional landscape designer in the area and my clients alll LOVE it... even through big parties on it. drawbacks: big upfront price tag because the current market form was hybridized in Japanese labs and is tightly controlled by the venture capitalists who did it and bees love its blossoms when it flowers in spring. Though a quick mow can take care of these I don't recommend it for family's with bee allergies. more info: where to buy kurapia or lux lawn ultra orrr California verbena roll...See MoreWhat is the best sod for active kid backyard in Los Angeles?
Comments (14)We were dead set on artificial. We had 3 companies come out and give us quotes and they all left samples. They all got scorching hot in our sun except the super short putting green style option which would look awful. All 3 vendors admitted it was a known shortcoming of all artificial grass and suggested installing a few in ground sprinklers to water down the turf when we’d have bare feet on it in summer time which would be every day. The last thing I want to do is have to water my artificial turf every time the kids want to play on it, not to mention the increase in temperature the turf would lead to in the back yard by acting like a giant heater in summer. We went back to the idea of real grass and here I am… trying to figure out our best sod option. The front yard was already completely destroyed during pool construction and we’ve decided to convert it to a low water drip system with pebbles, olive trees, and low water plants. We just have the back patch now that we want to keep real grass. What type sod would be the best option for our needs and climate?...See MoreGrey Water system for single family residence in Los Angeles
