chattering solenoids

I've looked at all kinds of forum info, and am still broken. I have 10 valves and a 12 station RD-1200 timer. All the valves will turn on and water will run OK. But, they all chatter. I bought a volt meter and checked the timer by touching the ground wire and a station that I turned on using the manual mode. The meter read around 24 best as I could tell. I went to the manifold and used the volt meter with the station running in manual mode. The meter read around 24 best I could tell. I've run the valve without the timer by using the bleeder valve, and of course it's quiet.

So, I'm at a loss as to why the solenoids all chatter so much. Besides being noisy beyond belief, I think the chattering is affecting how the water flows as well.

Any ideas? I've tried everything. My next step is to call in a landscape guy who knows something more than what I've tried!

You have the right idea. Hire a landscaper who is experienced with irrigation system. He can pinpoint where the chattering is actually coming from. It could be caused by many problematic things. A couple of things to try though. Make sure your main water source valves are fully open. Do you have any check valve or any other restrictive fittings in your system? Without using your controller slightly unscrew the solenoid and see if the zone starts up. Do you still hear the chattering? Listen close to what part of the valve is making the noise. Is it all the valves or just a few? Screw down the solenoid enough to turn off the zone and try again from the controller and see if the sound continues. If it does call the experts. Aloha JMHO - Water pressure - The valves are open, and I've checked my water pressure with a tester on various hose bibs. It seems to be between 45 - 50. Shouldn't that be enough to drive one valve with 4 sprinkler heads? I don't think my water pressure has really been any higher. If so, I think I can rule out low water pressure, which means it's back to wiring or the timer..... What do you think?

I also replaced one of the existing valves with a new valve actuator component and tested it. So, with that new valve it included new solenoid, diaphragm, everything. And, the brand new one chatters as well.

Back to needing an expert....

Thanks, folks, for all the good clues on the red wire issue above! I have a 2009 LTX1046 and had the same symptoms with the PTO cutting off at medium speed, as well as the no-reverse cut-off. I added 6 inches of wire, soldered and taped, to both the green and red (mine was black and white, but I traced it upstream and found red) wires. To answer the question from HU-680248234 above, yessir, you were correct, that was the location of the red wire connection. Note that what you were referring to is actually a blade electrical connector. I pulled it off with needle-nosed pliers and replaced with a new one soldered onto the end of my red wire. After reinstalling, give it a squeeze with pliers to ensure the new one stays in place. Views below are from below and the top (through the battery hole).

Para, True, valves close faster with higher water pressure. Anu, does the valve shut off when the controller is unplugged? If so, that also is a telltale sign that the controller is malfunctioning. We replaced a controller just today that was exibiting the same symptoms due to a lightning strike. Remedy: Replace the controller or if you have extra stations on the controller, move the wire from the guilty station to another station at the controller. And now a follow-up to my March 8, 2017 post: after working flawlessly for ALMOST 3 years, the hammer had returned! Upon the advice of a plumber friend, I removed the arresters and shook whatever water that would come out of them out. I then reinstalled and they quieted things down for about 3 washer loads then the pounding started back up again. I came to the conclusion that the gas charge had failed which was verified by the customer service department at Sioux Chief. I was told to put a pencil, etc into the plunger hole and push - if I met with great resistance, the arrester was OK; if the pencil was able to move the plunger, the charge had been lost. My charge was indeed lost. Since the installation was less that 3 years ago, the warranty kicked in and a new set of 2 is to be mailed to me. I was then advised that because I have a newer, high efficiency washer to install 2 arresters per line to lessen the shock and extend their lives. Long story short, I purchased 2 new arresters and installed them; when the replacements arrive, I'll install them in tandem with the original 2. They had better last longer than 3 years - MUCH longer! BTW, Lowe's pricing has risen from $9.99 ea to $ 12.99 ea today!!

The Korky 528 instructions include the height setting procedure. Searching the internet turns up a number of complaints about the Korky. But it is obvious that not every user installed it correctly. I have not personally experienced any unusual problems with the Korky although I usually use Fluidmaster. The Ultramax is, in my opinion, cramped for space in the area of the flush trip lever and the Korky sits low and under the lever. Aloha JMHO again - I actually bought a couple of those actuators. So, I just went to the timer, turned on a valve, then touched the live wire and the ground of my new actuator to the appropriate connectors on the timer. And, that new actuator chatters right at the timer! Doesn't that mean that the timer is shot??

The amazing thing to me is that you read my post and totally ignored it. I didn't mention anything about pressure and the more you explain the more confused I get about what you are actually experiencing. That is why hiring a local irrigation guy or talking to an experienced friend to look at your setup will be far more productive and hopefully fix your problem quicker than the back and forth process on this thread. I have no idea what you did at the controller with the wires. If it was appropriate or not and you seem in danger of being shocked or at least fry the controller. I don't understand the chattering you heard at the controller but it might be having a poor connection at the controller terminal from being hand held.

Are you describing an electrical chattering from the solenoid cycling on and off or water chattering through the valves or both? Your pressure is in the normal range for a good irrigation system to operate. Replace the controller and see if that stops it. The valve is probably opening and closing rapidly causing rapid water hammer. If all the valves are experiencing the same problem, it is most likely the controller with faulty connections or internal problems. (Just My Humble Opinion) Aloha

Usual cause is a timer going bad. A capacitor in the timer. Replacing or repairing the timer should fix it. It will get worse until it doesn't work.
