Do you know who landscaped this house in Palo Alto, CA?
Comments (7)Jo-- I'm not sure that IS turf in that strip--wouldn't surprise me if it's that mini-mondo. I use mini-mondo as an unerplanting in Harry Lauder's pot--works a treat and NEVER needs trimming... To ME it looks like a professionally planned garden that's been under an amateur garder-owner's care and planning for a few years. I inherited a professionally designed garden, and over the years, as light conditions (and my tastes) changed --I've pulled plants out and replaced them with other things. Not to mention the two blooming under-story trees I had to take down because they caught black-knot. There are few of the original perennial/shrub plantings left. And theh there was that huge retaining wall/paver project we did two years ago... Flyingflower--both the house and the design seem "French" to me--and fairly formal. Perhaps if you got online and looked at the local designers work, you could find someoen who could give you a similar look--you MIGHT even find the person who did it! Otherwise--I'd be tempted to knock on the door and ask...or write a letter with some form of contact info (like an e-mail address) and ASK. I'd address it to "The Owner of the Yellow House with the Gorgeous Garden" so they don't automaticlally assume it's JUNK. If I got such a note, I'd be flattered. And respond. But then, we all know I'm weird... melanie...See MoreFragrant tree at Stanford mall in Palo Alto?

Comments (15)People have really turned their back on dark natural wood tones and mixed wood tones juxtaposed together and I think that is one reason all of this is disappearing. People are willing to paint drywall a dark moody color because it's latex paint and it doesn't seem like much of a commitment. I think if Frank Lloyd Wright houses were easier to live in and maintain, they would be bought by more typical buyers and all the wood in some of them would be painted out, too. As it is, they attract a very specific sort of buyer, someone much less likely to alter. Photography is misleading, because a lot of time rooms that get a fair amount of light seem to photograph "dark". The reality is that so many modernist houses have so many windows, and windows in unusual positions that they actually get more light inside despite being covered with dark wood, than a conventional too fat house with middles of open concept rooms far from windows--light colored drywall not withstanding. My third floor has an exposed sheathing-raftered ceiling with a flat Jacobean stain on it (fumed oak color almost, and completely non reflective) but sometimes the room is still actually bright....See More$2.38M in Palo Alto
Comments (56)Seattle has become a sort of second Silicon Valley which has driven home prices to crazy levels as well, though not as crazy as Palo Alto. Because of the concentration of tech and industry here, salaries have also soared. An article in the Seattle Times a couple of days ago (September 14, 2018) had these two shocking statistics: 1. The median income for a couple with kids in Seattle is $161,000. 2. The number of families with an income of at least $200,000 is greater than the number making less than $50,000. It's a good place to be if you've lived here for decades and bought a house back then when you could get a very nice place for twice your annual income. If you've just moved here or aren't able to earn a spectacular income, it's a strain....See MorePRM Custom Builders
