Freezing pipes running under the overhang of our house
Comments (2)You will get bursting sooner or later. It may be possible to insulate them if you can get access, but you would need to do it in a way that they pick up some heat from the house. If the pipes are in a space that is unheated, insulating them only slows down the speed at which they cool down to the ambient temperature of where they are...it doesn't keep them at a higher temperature in the long run if there is no water flow through the pipes for a number of hours. I had some pipes that ran from my kitchen, up into the attic and then back down into another part of the house. Part of the piping in the attic was above the blown-in insulation and they would freeze if it got too cold. In order to keep them from bursting, I cleared out the loose insulation around them, installed some cardboard "tents" and put the insulation back on top of the tents. That way the pipes picked up heat from the heated living space below, and the heat was held in by the insulation above the pipes. If you don't have a way to expose the existing pipes to heat. you might have to figure out a new place to run them. One other thing that can be done is to buy special heating strips that you wrap around pipes and plug into a receptacle, but you should only do this for sections of pipe that are easily accessible. You wouldn't want to have a heating strip buried in a wall....See MoreAdvice on restoration of wood siding that was hidden under aluminum

Re scaffolding, may I piggy back ont his thread to ask - how much of an ordeal is it erecting and moving it? I have a 1 1/2 story and am trying to decide whether to attempt scaffolding or get/borrow a taller extension ladder.. I think the ladder might be a lot of hassle having to move it so much and futz with it each time....See Morestucco under wood siding

Comments (1)I think you neeed to get drwaings of the planned addition and IMO a door going into the house from the porch but at the front is preferable to a side entry .I would aslo run a porch all across that wall you show in the planning pic. You really need an architect to make this appear as if it was there all the time . I think doing the siding before doing the additon is abad idea since unless you buy all the siding for the whole house and store somehwere chances are it will not match when you are ready for the rest. I like your plan to add the gable and overhang but it needs to be done perfectly or it will just look like a tack on....See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
