I would need to see a layout including the skylight placement to say. Just from the description it sounds like that end of the island would be really heavy looking, with the sink, stools and lights all concentrated on that end. It might make it look more out of balance. Layouts always help.

What happened to my reply I wrote a few hours ago?! I guess I did it again, clicked off without clicking all the way through. I hate that. I'm in so much discomfort today (stupid back again) that I must have spaced it. I'm sorry...(side note: finally got desperate enough that I've got an acupuncture (!) appt for Wed--never done it before!--and they are even working me in tonight--I hurt myself *again* since I started this post, stepping on a tiny freakin' rock, being thrown just the slightest bit off balance, and now I remember what sciatica felt like...this is out of control) Anyway, thanks for all the replies. What we're doing (or thinking of doing...) is, since the roof has to be replaced, using the chance to put in some good new skylights as replacements in the bath up there. But we'd like to take the opportunity to move the one that was placed directly over the shower (?), which sucked the humidity/condensation right into its frame and the drywall, and cover that up and open up a hole in the bedroom instead, so that some of that hot air will be able to get out too. (yes, there are *two* windows in there already, but we have been keeping them shut and running an air conditioner in there instead--maybe with this skylight we can get the hot air sucked out and won't have to run the AC as much) val, the shade idea is definitely helpful, although the two skylights both been ordered already and I'm wondering if there is an aftermarket way to do it--like what reno describes with the roller shades, if that's a good way to go about it. The loudness aspect is something we're going to look into *seriously* (as in have her hang around in her bathroom during a rainstorm .... Ach...I'm really not feeling well. I hope I get relief tonight and I can write more a cogent reply. I'm going to put off writing anymore until I'm back, but I wanted you all to know I really appreciate your sharing your experiences. Bring on those needles...

Just a note in general - many of the same people will comment on this that did on your other threads on this ADU (which have apparently been deleted?), however, as many Houzzers post hundreds of comments, they won't remember the threads let alone the details of your project. So you may be re-answering the same questions and re-litigating project and lifestyle choices. Maybe a link to old threads or summary of project history. The concept for your project scope and layout looks good. A couple notes getting into fine detail: - Stair/Laundry: Drawings show (4) windows: 2 down low and 2 up high (configured like a die?). I imagine the intent is only 2 up high, or 2 stepped up the stair angle. If you want (4), then the Laundry window should be shifted over to light up that area, and the alignment worked out in elevation drawings. Also the Living fireplace shelving wall is now shown as a full height wall (remember half-wall prior thread) so you will not gain light to Living from a high window if you have one. Also, you may benefit from having a stacked W/D. The only storage (things like vacuum, toilet paper, swiffer/mop, old papers/collectibles, not talking bikes and stuff in outside storage) is upstairs. Might be good to work in storage under stair, by using stacked W/D and having storage extend back under stair from within Mudroom. - Garage/Parking: Verify with your car size that parked inside a 23' long stall that there is room to walk in front of the shelf en route to the trash. Otherwise you'd have to duck under it. The service door must swing out because of the 10' width, however it will then hit a car parked in a 19' long stall. Conundrum. - Mech Rm: Think about your joist layout. You will have soffits/lower ceilings for ductwork and where will those be. Note to @bpath the garbage enclosure is outside of the house footprint as the 2nd floor covers the Storage/Mech. - Den: The previous thread layout options had limits with a sloping roof. This version has the same massing where the roof will give the architect fits. Last version could be improved; let's see this version's elevations. - Skylights: Rafters must oppose each other. So unless some unecessary framing is occurring, skylights will be located within the rafter spacing, and they won't be highlighting the floor below them exactly where you want unless some detailed framing is mapped out. In the Living, I see intent on skylight at top of stairs (good), then other one symmetrical about fireplace. In the Kitchen/Nook, they are not aligned with Living, not relating to anything below, nor are at the same height from the ridge as Living. IMO, this skylight layout is messy and an afterthought. The FP wall is non-symmetrical, so not a strong enough point to make the skylights symmetrical. The one close to the sliding door will make a bright spot combined with light from the door, over mere unassigned floor space. The Kitchen/Nook skylights are not relating to anything. Options: A) align the stair landing with one at the stove, or sink and window if you relocate them. B) align one over the Nook table and align with Living one C) if you keep the Kitchen skylights having a non-related layout than to the Living, use a different language [like square vs rectangular]. - Sink: Maybe it should be at least slid down, if not relocated as an open DW interferes with Nook seating. Skylight placement may be a dynamic enough visual to help dictate sink placement too.

@Jon Alan thanks for taking a look! Sorry for the small pics, that's how they came in the report. I zoomed in on some pics here below: Basically a few clues: The inspection report specifically say it is a 2x4 truss system. The gable roof spans over much more than 8' in both directions so it's unlikely (to my knowledge) that 2 x 4 rafters are enough. There are plywood gussets at attachment points instead of overlapping pieces that I thought rafters usually have? There isn't a ridge board but a gusset instead. But ya I think you're right, having someone qualified to inspect again would probably be extra safe!
