Milgard Ultra or Wood Clad vs Marvin Integrity windows
Comments (4)Well, most houses in the bay area are still well over a million, and we are in that category. I know it sounds like a little amount, but I just keep thinking that I could spend the $4000+ in other ways (put in a central vac system, get the sub zero instead of the other fridge, etc), and get much more for my money. I really need to find an interior white painted wood window, and a white painted fiberglass window, and see if there's a real difference. I was hoping someone would have experienced this before as well. You're probably right, and I just have to jump and make that decision....See MoreMilgard Ultra vs. Marvin Infinity
Comments (4)There were a couple of issues on one project where the windows were not sealing properly when they were installed plumb, true, and square. These windows were adjusted and re-adjusted to ensure exact fitment. Milgard did not view it as a product defect and the air that was leaking was claimed to be allowable, however, the customer and I were both unhappy with the results. That cost me money. The sample they shipped me for an in house demo didn't work right as I pulled it out of the plastic for the home owner. Their service team damaged a window while trying to get a sash out and claimed it was the customer that had done the damage. They actually used a kitchen utensil (expensive knife) to remove one sash and damaged the knife in the process. The factory service aspect may be great on the West Coast but it was a liability on the East Coast....See MoreMarvin Infinity vs. Loewen--patio/sliding French door
Comments (8)sandyponder, thanks for the details. That is a good deal, to be *sure*! I went to the local Sierra Pacific rep on Wednesday; he took all the specs and told me he'd e-mail me with a quote for pretty much what you got except brown on the outside. He has never written me back. Maybe time to call him. Where do you find auctions that have those kinds of things??? Do you go to them often? People find the most amazing things at auctions. I can tell you that reclaimed probably old-growth DF flooring goes for *quite reasonable* prices out here...no more than any other wood, and less than some...we're in the PNW, though. Now that you've told me the price, I'm going to bug the SP guy...maybe he thought I wasn't serious or was just blowing me since we're just buying one door? I don't know...but that's at least $1K less than other similar doors. Hard to resist. If I can just get him to offer it to me LOL...See MoreMilgard Ultra/Marvin Infinity/Starmark Evo (Okna 7500)/VistaMark
Comments (2)The Starmark should be the pretty clear winner as performance goes both thermally and structurally once you have all of those numbers aggregated. The Infinity is a nice, well built unit, as well, just not in the same space efficiency wise, although there could be other options that could point that direction for you like a stainable or other color painted interior. Not familiar with Vistamark. Milgard is decent, it fares well against the many less than stellar units offered on the West coast. Not quite as well IMO when going against some of the cold-weather-born unit in the East and Midwest. As far as the certifications, as mentioned on the other site they are nice to have, but I wouldn't get hung up on them. Installation Masters specifically is more weighted toward new construction installation. In remodeling work, there are so many different circumstances to deal with that experience is what makes the biggest difference. The history, general reputation (reviews etc), association with a quality manufacturer/product on a direct basis should all give a good indication of the quality to expect....See Moremonke
