Comments (3)I'd suggest that you need to get a structural engineer (or good residential framing contractor) to take a look in the attic and check out your roofing framing in that area. It seems that your framing is not capable of spanning that area and the roof loads are loading and causing deflection of your cieling drywall enough to cause the cracking. If the load path isn't checked and corrected then cracks will continue form at that location....See MoreHair line crack ceiling
Comments (7)If it bothers you get a tube of caulk, Dap Quik bathroom caulk red & white tube, cut off tip at angle & squeeze out a little on your finger & rub into the crack, comes in almond or white, or clear(don't like clear)can't tell color of paint but then you can paint over it in couple of days, it doesn't usually reopen, I used it in cracks after a quake at my house & they don't reopen. Just rub it in, don't gob it on crack, crack should be smooth so when painted won't show. I even used it where corners above garage cracked upward, stayed all these yrs. Outdoor caulk I bought once had to redo as it opened up....See MoreFaint straight line on my new quartz island. Any idea what it is?
Comments (40)Update: I stopped at the kitchen cabinet maker today. It's a well known and reputable company in my area. I picked my counter top sample actually in his showroom. The counters were ordered through him. He already knew about the mark and that they were coming today to try and fix it. I showed him before and after photos. I explained when you walk right around the perimeter of the kitchen island you don't really see it so I thought it was fine when they left.......BUT the reason is because they dulled the finish. When you enter the room and you aren't standing right at the counter you can see the dull spot. The owner of the cabinet company has been in the business over 35 years and I trust his advice. I'm just not sure if it will matter to me as much in a few weeks as it does today.... He told me I can wait to decide. He sent my photos over to the counter top company so it's documented. He said in a month from now once I am using my kitchen (and my pendant lights are in) if it's still bothering me we will address it. He also said he does a large amount of business with them (about 100k per month) so he will make sure that they make it right if I choose to revisit the issue. So glad I went with this company. Love the owner. He's great to work with....See MoreWould you please tell me what my (cracked) walls are made of?
Comments (5)The walls appear to be plaster, and from 1903 they are probably on top of wooden lathe. Fixing cracks in plaster is tedious and time consuming, but not really that hard. In most cases you use a knife to widen the outer part of the crack so it forms a V indent that will allow new plaster to fill in and adhere. Then fill it with plaster of paris (or maybe drywall compound) and use a drywall taping knife to make it all smooth. Sand lightly with a wide, firm sanding block to get the final even finish. If you use plaster of paris - it has a short working time (about 15 minutes) and sets up quite hard, so only mix up a little at a time. Its better to underfill the crack and go back to add more if needed. Get the wall perfectly smooth before you paint because its much harder to sand after you paint. There are different types of drywall compound, and I'm not sure which mix is the best match for the expansion/contraction of old plaster. Some has a very short working time (20 minutes) while other types are more forgiving (90 minutes or more). Bruce...See MoreSnipo roofer
