One big problem that has not really been is service and parts. Imagine being without a range for a month, while you wait for a part? How about finding someone to actually diagnose and repair the thing? Please keep these probable after-install problems in mind. Remember, everything breaks, eventually. As to more specifics, there is no reason to import a European DW. Most of the big European (Bosch, Miele, Asko and one other that escapes me) brands are already available here. A refrigerator I would not import under any circumstance, as the power differences (voltage and cycles) would affect it the most. It is trivial to get 240 Volt power for a fridge, but getting 50 Hz (older name is cycles per second) is very difficult, expensive, and inefficient. Running motors (compressors) on AC power they were not designed for (60 Hz instead of 50Hz) will probably do no harm to the motor, but it will screw up the efficiency of the system, meaning the fridge may cost several times the usual cost of operation to run. This leaves the range. You can get AGA ranges, and several French ranges in the USA today. However, getting another type in is probably a real headache, from an insurance point-of-view, if nothing else. If an appliance you install is not UL or CSA listed, particularly a heat-producing appliance, your insurance company might disavow any claims you make, EVEN IF THE APPLIANCE IS NOT AT FAULT. That's right, if you have a flood, and the insurance inspector finds a non-approved range in your kitchen, the insurance company can disavow the claim, period. If you really want a non-standard range, I would get, in writing from your insurance companies main office, a signed letter, on their letter head, stating they would cover it the same as any American-made range. Then save that letter in a safe deposit box. In addition, be aware that clocks (for sure) and timers will probably not operate correctly, and you may have problems with any other on-board electronics. Gaggeneau makes an oven you might like, and so might Bluestar (see link), which offers 190 colors. Lastly, one other disadvantage of European appliances: Size. Most European appliances will be slightly too small or slightly too large to fit in 'holes' made for American inch-size appliances. Hi Autumn. I'm glad others chimed in with their experiences before I saw this. I never owned anything except electric coil until my new gas rangetop. I had only cooked on gas a few times and that was enough to sell me. I did briefly consider induction during my reno planning. The potential hum of a pan on the burner; the fact that a couple of my pans wouldn't work with the technology; and the inability to cook on it during a power outage turned me away from induction. We lose power, albeit briefly, a couple of times a year, and I feel helpless when I can't make a warm meal when it's cold and dark. Since I have a rangetop, I can't comment on using gas to power my oven. From reading over on the Appliance Forum, I know gas is better for certain foods as mentioned earlier. I'm happy to have my electric wall ovens, although I'm sure I would have adapted to a gas oven if necessary. My rangetop is a 36" 6 burner Capital Culinarian. All burners are of equal power at 23,000 btus and are open, as opposed to sealed. It runs counter-intuitive, at least it did to me, that an open burner would be easier to clean. Gas and coil still don't compare in cleanability to induction. Did I find it difficult to change to gas? Yes and no. As far as one type of fuel to another, not hard at all! A joy, in fact! The ability to adjust the heat so quickly makes cooking easier for me. My difficulties with gas were more with my rangetop's extremely powerful burners, which weren't adjusted properly out of the box. I had a horrible time simmering anything on any burner, as have many CC owners. After some parts swapping and a couple of tech visits, I seem to be able to simmer most anything I've tried so far well enough to get by. Did I miss anything? Did I get everything answered? Hope so!

If you're looking for the opinion of an EE, I would gladly give you my opinion on the subject -- if you'd like it in writing, I can even sell your wife a certificate saying as much! Maybe that wouldn't help. I don't know. What are we talking about, anyway? Cooktops aren't always-on. They're either off until turned on, or pulsing infrequently to check if a pot is present. The RMS EMF at the surface is not very large either way, when not actively heating something. When heating, it's only large under the work being heated. EMF drops off rapidly with distance. If your wife is so strange that she finds it enjoyable to read books while laying over the cooktop, I might be concerned, but only for mental health reasons, not for EMF reasons. Or if shoving her head towards a pot that's being heated, I would be more concerned for safety reasons, and then mental health reasons... There are biological effects of EMF, but not at these field strengths. Not by orders of magnitude. The primary effect is simply dumb old heating. Diathermy machines, microwave ovens, and the military's ADS, operate on this mechanism. There is no biological effect beyond heating (obviously, too much heat and you cause burns, but that's not unique to EMF). Strong pulsed fields can induce voltages in neural tissue (transcranial magnetic stimulation), which do have direct neural effects, but these are temporary. Anything that produces fields with too little energy to cause noticeable heating, or pulse peaks strong enough to cause noticeable induction, is completely and utterly inconsequential. Example: ESD can have quite large (peak) EMF, but is over very quickly, and delivers very little energy (on a human scale). (Anyway, sparks are well known to cause people to involuntarily jump or twitch. But again, that's just a neural stimulation thing, nothing more.)

Frequently, the appliance manufacturer already does the required derating for you. They tell you to install a 30A circuit, even if the appliance only draws a fraction of that. It requires very careful reading of the specs to find out what the required circuit size vs. the actual power consumption is. And sometimes this information simply isn't available. In our kitchen remodel, the electrician asked me to help him collect this information for all of our appliances. Several hours later and despite talking to tech support for each of the manufacturers, we often only had ballpark numbers (e.g. an estimated HP rating for the motor without any additional electrical information). We had to make a couple of educated guesses. And in the end we simply used one circuit per appliance and generously over-spec'd the size of the circuit. That's a good idea anyway in case we ever need to replace the appliance. A few dollars more on copper wire right now, is much cheaper than ripping open the walls to rewire things in the future. On the other hand, lots of sins can be forgiven. Electrical breakers trip slowly (i.e. it takes several minutes to trip, if the load is only exceeded by a couple of tens or even hundreds of percent). The NEC is very conservative with required wire sizes. Insulation takes quite a bit of heat to start melting, so electrical fires don't necessarily happen. Appliances to a degree can compensate for voltage drops. Many appliances only have short periods of time, when they draw full power. People don't operate all their appliances at the same time. Etc. etc. That's not to suggest that you should cut corners. But it explains why people can get away with doing so. And they often can get away with it for many years before they start noticing problems.
