Boscobel vs. Lady of Shalott
Comments (21)I also found Boscobel to be weak, small, and a stingey bloomer. The flowers are pretty and unusual in color, but the perfume was not that stong for me either, certainly not as strong as many, many others (but that is subjective) including some older DA's like LEH. The flowers are beautiful but there were not enough of them. It was a continual victim pests of all sorts, depsite my best efforts, which was not the case for its neighbor Roald Dahl, a very healthy plant comparatively speaking that seemed to be resistant to everything and anything. My Boscobel's roses were also suspectible to rot/balling. And its leaves never seemed to stay on it, and apparently I am not alone. See also, the review and comments here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8-oAoOiHwk. LOS had better growth and was healthier, and had more blooms, very pretty, even if it is not as gorgeous or fragrant as LEH, for example (in my opinion). It was very low maintenance--no pests or disease or anything wrong--but it does tend toward long, thin, branches that don't grow up, but out....See MoreLady of Shalott: experiences no-spray in humid zone?
Comments (19)My Lady of Shallot is almost always some blend of peach, pink and yellow. It’s own root in slightly alkaline soil...barely over ph 7. I knew it would want to be tall in our climate so I started pruning it to about 4 foot high (ie. Clipping back any octopus canes). It seems to have settled into being a thick hedge. When temps reach 100 the petal crisp but hold well in the low 90s. We have dry heat. Mine gets about 6 hours sun. Zero fungal issues; rust and mildew are the big problems here. We never get blackspot. I don’t bother removing leaves in the winter, which you have to do here on the roses if you need to have a period of no leaves for horticulture oil spray and other cleanup desires. And still no fungal issues on last year’s leaves either. The canes are very thin and flexible so would be easy to train for climbing. I wanted a freestanding tall rose with leaves to the ground and it seems to be complying. I searched my photos and found the one that was most orange (black background) plus a few others with her more typical colors in my yard. The pink is Paul Neyron, which is a terrible ruster here....See MoreDavid Austin Rose - Lady of Shalott (2nd year)
Comments (5)I know exactly what you are talking about HT! My neighbor suddenly decided he wanted to grow roses and he's do beautifully with 0 black spot. Of course they're in full sun position all day long so I think that accounts for a lot of it. He even grows Chrysler imperial blackspot free no spray. He's currently growing 7 lady of shallot having added 3 more this spring. They were constantly in bloom last year along with Rouald Dahl....See MoreLast Two Blooms in 2021 of Lady of Shalott
Comments (8)Oh wow!!! I've been debating whether to get LoS or not, many people's pictures show her leaning more yellow which kind of put me off, as I already have my share of yellow , but the colors on yours are fantastic! Does it bloom more yellow or orange depending on soil ph or temperature or nutrients or something like that?...See MoreHoang Ton - Zone 9a
