transplanting Kwanzan cherry with two trunks
Comments (18)here is my BEST suggestion .... if this was from a good friend... destroy it now.. and go buy one at the bigboxstore.. and plant it instead.. you will always have the story of the generosity of the gift.. and a great plant besides .... and then invite the friend over next year.. and tell them how great it is... lol ... since it is a root sucker .... it might not even be kwanzan.. and frankly.. i would have no interest in investing 3 to 5 years.. to find out if it is ... if it is not a good friend.. get rid of it .... not all gifts are worthy of keeping.. no matter what the intent ... i can not tell you.. how many things that dad brought to my first house ..... that mysteriously 'died' ... rotflmbo .... you cant be rude and tell him to quit bringing stuff ... but hey.. they all dont need to live.. in my yard anyway ... lol ... BTW ... it is borderline reliable in its flowering in my zone 5 ... subject to frosts and freeze in early spring.. all subject to your micro climate ... mine is only supreme.. MAYBE every other year .... some years nothing.. other years.. its OK .... it really is one of the hard ones.. for a newbie .... not that it will die.. but that you will be happy about it all ... ken...See MoreYellow Leaves on Kwanzan Cherry
Comments (7)From here in Ct. Zone 5 I thank all of you for your replies. As far as planting now in the present heat we are encountering there was no choice. Project began June 16 and all lawn plant installation has to be completed within the next several weeks. I realize that this is completely out of season for lawn planting as well since there is a cut off here in ct. for seeding from June 15-Aug 15 but we had no choice and all management realizes this situation. I gather that there could be a number of reasons for 1 tree to be defoliating but when you consider that we have planted 71 trees and a very large number of shrubs our percentage of success is extremely high. It still bothers me that the only tree that is going through this stress has to planted in front of school....See MoreTangerine tree...should I cut this branch off?
Comments (7)Thanks Patty for your response...as a matter of fact I had my pruners in hand yesterday but as I looked at it one more time I decided to keep the branch ,lol...it looks healthy and upon a little more examination the leaves do look like the rest of them...so I'll keep it for now. And actually it still has the a single trunk even with that branch...I can always remove it later but for now I need all the leaves and branches I have...the tree was planted almost 14 months ago...its bloomed and has teeny tiny fruits on it. Here it is when planted January 27, 2014...second photo is now...See MoreWhat to do with my Kwanzan Cherry Tree
Comments (24)Lawn, being a lawn is likely to need fertilization. Whether tree needs it later or not depends on individual situation and not sweeping generalization. Cherry trees do not come back well from heading cuts, tend to grow off at right angles when lopped. Also there is the problem of their disease susceptibility, introducing pathogens through pruning. The tree has a genetic blueprint to even out the top as it grows, does not need to be cut on for this to happen. The way for it to fill in nicely is to have it grow vigorously, not be dwarfed and deformed by arbitrary top pruning and subsequent small, badly angled replacement sprouts. The fact that the one branch grew like a weed on a prior occasion is not made up for by the other branches growing more slowly now. Quite the opposite, in fact. once this guy is up and growing-think Ken's "tree years"-it will behave pretty much just like all the others of its type Yes, definitely - trees have a growth phase and then a reproductive phase during their lives. This is why so many trees have crown shapes that are more upright and pointed for a time and then more rounded and spreading later. Seedlings (specimens grown from seed rather than grafts or cuttings of already sexually mature examples) of wild species trees often do not flower at all for perhaps decades while the top is developing....See Moreforever_a_newbie_VA8
