My fig tree is showing no new growth this Spring
Comments (39)My 5 year old beautiful fig tree also did not survive the winter in DC. Thankfully i see new growth coming up from the ground. The advice i got from an arborist was to check the branches to see if any of the tree is alive and cut down anything dead. Scrape a twig with your nail or a small pocketknife to reveal the layers beneath the bark. Dead twigs will be gray or brown inside. A living tree has a green cambium layer immediately beneath the outer bark and green, white or cream-colored wood inside the twig. Check several twigs in different parts of the tree to ensure the entire tree is dead. good luck!...See MoreHow many figs do your container fig trees produce?
Comments (10)Thisisme in my opinion is very correct in saying it depends on conatianer size, fertilizer used, tree size in container. Some of my larger ones are grown in i would say 30 gallon containers i come to realize, i say this because i was at Menards yesterday and saw what was advertised as 23 gallon containers for 5.98 in black and blue color almost bought a few , there the kind with the rope handles but im thinking of keeping my new plants in smaller ones for space in garage. Soory to vear off here. Anyhoot, when i kept count 2 years back i had 150 from el.sals hardy chiago was near 100 and my unknown was at 30 figs and 75% never ripened because its a late riper in my climate. Since then i stopped counting. This year bad year cause of bad weather. Martin...See MoreHow Cold Have Your Fig Trees Survived?
Comments (18)Thanks for the input everyone. I don't have any mature figs in containers, so all of my fig trees are in 'one basket' so to speak. I did spray them with Wilt-Pruf last week, but I don't know if conditions were ok to polymerize the substance. This may have had the effect of making me feel better, rather than actually helping the figs. My smallest is a 1-year old Desert King - last night I wrapped in in a towel and overturned a garbage can over it. The temperature was about 22F at the time. It usually doesnt get "too" windy here. Since most cold damage is supposed to be from dessication, there is some hope with that thought. From CRFG: "Fully dormant trees are hardy to 12°-15° F, but plants in active growth can be damaged at 30° F. Fig plants killed to the ground will often resprout from the roots". From "Italian Fig trees": "They thrive in areas where winter temperatures do not drop below 15°F (-10°C). Very young trees can be damaged by fall frosts...below 25°F (-4°C)." Purdue: "The tree can tolerate 10°-20° of frost in favorable sites." We'll see. I'll be very bummed out if they die....See Morewhat is your fig tree doing now? mid-April
Comments (11)I wish I could answer this question. We have a fig tree in the backyard of our new home in Poulsbo, WA, however we haven't moved yet, so I don't know what it's doing--but I sure am curious! We're going to be there for the last two weeks of April and can't wait to see what's blossoming and budding at our new house. There's also a large Mimosa tree in the yard and I'm so curious about what it looks like in spring and summer. We're moving to the PNW from Orlando, FL, and are really looking forward to being able to garden again!...See More41 North (Zone 7a/b, NE, coastal)
