Need info on Hydrangea Delft Blue

Hi! I received this as a gift, but it has no info on the tag except the grower's URL, which is empty when I visited it. I have other hydrangeas, so I'm not unfamiliar with the plant. I know it's a mophead, but I know nothing about potential size (is this a drawf I can plant in a container?). I have to assume its care will be similar to other mopheads (pH color changes, blooms on old wood, etc.). Is anyone familiar with this variety? TYIA!

Another Dutch import as part of the My Beautiful series. These have been bred as florist or gift plants (why it is flowering now) rather than a landscape item so extra caution may be required, especially in your zone. It is supposed to stay compact at 3-4' tall and 3-4' wide so a good candidate for a container. Which is smart in your area, as it will need winter protection.

Mindy, I've worked in the nursery industry for years, do horticultural consultations and teach gardening classes - I'm supposed to know all this stuff :-) 'Taube' is still available through Heronswood (aka Burpeewood) in addition to Joy Creek and also Hydrangeas Plus, which btw is an excellent online source for hydrangeas. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see it available at your local nurseries or garden centers - the Teller series hydrangeas have been very popular in this country for a number of years......they just don't get the same press as the newer intros like the Endless Summer series seem to. And if you like 'Taube', look for 'Blaumeise' (Blue Tit, Teller Blue) - this is one of my top fav hydrangeas with very large lacecaps and the most incredible blue color you can imagine. I quite like Kolkwitzia - at least the older forms of it. It is kind of an old fashioned plant that has fallen a bit out of favor but it produces prolific blooms for what I consider to be a rather extended period for a spring flowering shrub. It can get to be quite large and ungainly looking, which might explain its current lack of popularity, but if you prune/groom regularly to keep it looking tidy and within scale, I think it's a great garden addition. As to being a top choice......maybe not, but I don't garden in zone 5 so not as familiar with your limitations for shrub selection :-) Here is a link that might be useful: Hydrangea macrophylla 'Blaumeise'

Hi Ivysmom, First I hope you have way better luck than I did. Jon (the seller) never would respond to my emails. Needless to say he sent them and didn't advise when he was sending so they arrived while I was at work and they sat in 105 degree heat all day. Very dried out, I watered and planted in the hopes they would survive. They didn't. I sent him an email advising of this and he replied that it was my fault for letting them sit out in the heat. I had no idea when they would arrive because he did not respond to my emails. Very very poor customer service. I hope you have a better outcome. Let me know how it goes.

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Oslo' Variety Info?

Thanks, Luis. I never buy garden plants from the grocery store, but was so smitten by the lovely flower form and the white eye of this hydrangea. And of course, the color. And I figured the grower was acidifying the soil to some degree, so I went back to Trader Joe's to check on more of this variety. They apparently had just gotten in another large delivery. Sure enough, 'Oslos' in every shade of blue to pink, so they were simply messing around with the soil pH, but good to know this is a variety that WILL blue up. I also had a very nice chat with the grower as well. She assured me it will do well outside - her yard is full of them and she lives up in N. California, so climate is not too terribly different as far as hydrangeas go. Plus, my hydrangeas (Incrediball and possibly an Annabelle, was here when I moved in) do very well here, as do everyone else's hydrangeas as long as they're given afternoon shade (east or north exposure). My soil is 6.2 to about 6.7, we're a bit on the alkaline side, so my hydrangeas are pink (I'm a Master Gardener). I remember when I was little growing up in Vancouver, BC, my grandmother had the most gorgeous and huge hydrangea bushes that were full of lovely blue, blue flowers, due to their much more acidic soil. For us, actually, using aluminum sulfate works better to blue up those hydrangeas that will turn blue. Usually, folks will plant Nikko Blue here, and then treat with aluminum sulfate. You can acidify the soil with soil sulfur, but you still need to apply aluminum sulfate to get them to turn blue. Otherwise, you end up with the color I picked up, sort of a violet :-) So, I'll probably never get these to be blue, but I'll experiment a bit to see if I can at least get them to a pretty violet. Thanks for the tips, hoping more to see if anyone has grown this new variety, and how they do in the garden. My Annabelle tends to develop mildew in the location I'm going to be planting these 'Oslo' hydrangeas, the Incrediball is still lovely and full of blooms. I think I'm going to yank out the Annabelle, pick up 3 my Incrediballs, and plant both the Anabells and the Oslos along the back side of the house where they do so well. Patty S.

This (the leaf drop) will begin to happen anyway as Fall approaches, however it may have been excellerated by the fact that you kept the plant indoors. Hydrangeas do not make good indoor plants. They need to be kept moist at all times and most indoor environments do not provide adequet humidity. Sounds like the plant is still in decent shape so just keep it outside in a spot protected from winter's worst (usually up against the house) and/or throw a blanket or some mulch around it and it will probably make you very happy next Spring......yg

As always, gardengal, you come through! Thank you!! May I ask if you found this info out online, where? Is there more info I can gather there? Or it's just from your wealth of experience? I was flummoxed to hit a dead end in my research.

(Given the loads of flowers, I knew it was forced and might not flower again this season, but I didn't want to bother planting it unless it could survive. I'll wait til risk of frost has passed up here; it'll be on our deck, so easy to protect next spring.)

I did find the info online but it took some doing!! A couple of sites had some clues that I used to hunt a bit further but most were European growers websites with minimal data. I'm not sure you will find much more but maybe search under the My Beautiful series to see what that turns up.

Very nice shade of purple. Reminds me of another mophead I saw at a grocery store in Columbia. Almost bought it but decided not to fly back home carrying it. Trying to replicate soil conditions would have been tough. Lt alone flying back on an airplane somehow. Ha. Most florist hydrangeas tend to be compact (no guarantees though) so consider a larger pot when you have time. Yes, its care will be similar to that of other mopheads. Purples may need a pH around 6. Its winter hardiness will depend on your location (probably not in 6a) and how much hardiness -if any- was bred into it. Many times, they are not that winter hardy so they tend to be bloom unreliable and all new spring growth originates from the crown. In that case, they will need winter protection (if planted outside) from your city's average date of first frost through your average date of last frost. Or you could grow it in the pot and move the pot into a garage/basement during that same timeframe.
