Comments (16)I wonder if a sycamore tree that has grown in the 4 years I've put in the stucco tea garden is impacting her either with shade or water hogging? Adding irrigation to roses has had some unintended consequences. We have had some trees explode with growth. This year, Lisa and Rekha, we hit 100 F eight days total. I'm not sure sometimes what is going on. Some roses are blooming constantly (MFK) and others much less. Since the oldest Teas are 4 yo down to 1 year olds I'm still in the beginning phase here. The irrigation can also give out. I'm moving to the Netafim buttons because the flag emitters seem to give out. Since the stucco Tea garden faces directly south, for all I know shade could help. There is also a Leland cypress stump in that east side of the bed which could be depressing DdB. Who wouldn't be depressed with that lunk in there? (My husband gave out after the chain saw was destroyed taking out two other stumps). That is a really hot garden overall, but I do think the west end blooms better than the east end on this directly south facing garden, and the tree shades the east end sometimes. My newer wood fence Tea garden has the fence running directly north/south and both east facing and west facing sides seem to be doing equally well over there. No tree shade, and cooler without the south stucco face. There, I have 8 footers ( Adam and Maman Cochet and William R Smith) and one Comtesse Emmeline de Guigne who is probably 30 inches now blooming pretty constantly and they are younger than DdB. In the stucco Tea east side, I might try to treat DdB to extra fish fertilizer/kelp treats next summer, since she is dealing with the stump and Sycamore shade....See MoreAnyone know where to purchase DA wedding roses as plants?
Comments (22)Hi grow power! I too fell in love with the DA wedding roses initially, after having Juliet in my bouquet, but there is no way of getting a plant. I looked into it extensively. I know people have attempted to root the high-end florist roses as well, but they just won’t take. Especially the imported ones, they are treated and it makes it even harder. Evelyn is a wonderful suggestion, along with the Jayne rose from Grace Rose Farm. I’m unsure about her scent, but Gracie is wonderful, so I’m sure if you email you she will respond. Another one that you might consider is Princess Charlene de Monaco. She has the rocky edges, gets quite large as she blows out, but doesn’t have much yellow, really. However, I have found, on my young bush, that she will have some blooms much more peachy-pink than others, that will have a bit of yellow towards the center. A newer Austin you might like is Emily Brontë, though I don’t have much exeperience with her, and her blooms are undoubtedly smaller. Good luck!...See MoreIs it true that orange-ish roses are less favored? If yes, why?
Comments (158)I think she means the original E. Boerner Aloha that was used extensively by David Austin in his early breeding efforts. This rose is classified as a large flowered climber and (for me) would never make a natural looking bush shrub. It can naturally grow bolt upright so I'm finding it's best grown as a short climber training its canes while young and pliable. Currently its wrapping itself around a make-shift tuteur, but since planting in the ground last year, is reaching onward and upward. I'll need to make a new much taller obelisk. While I feel intuitively that Ingrid is a delicate flower with hands to match, (I also recall them being very pretty and well-kept from a past picture), Aloha is a huge powderpuff of a rose and almost always in bloom. I'm adding a second this summer. Aloha Hawaii is on my 'someday soon' list. FreedomGardens also grows it so it should be hardy in your zone, flowers, but I'm not sure how much it will climb. :-)) P.S. A couple of the entries on HMF are duplicates using alternate names and the breeders' codes....See MoreAlternatives to Cut Wedding Roses?
Comments (40)Thanks Diane. I missed her garden photos and posts. We should somehow to get them back. Beth, Carol and John are back now which is a good start. It's time for all of them to come back home. Home sweet home. I also missed Michael G, he was such an experienced rose gardener that had many helpful tips. I haven't seen Professor Henry's posts lately. Hope everything goes well with him. He should be around 90. I want to give him an online birthday party and wish him a long rosy life until 125! :-) I haven't had any pretty garden photos for a while now. My two gardens are super messy. I didn't have the time to pull weeds while working on rental after work, weeds were taller than roses. My neighbors thought I quit gardening. Lol NY garden has Canadian thorn weeds everywhere, I cleared most of them out in the front yard garden now, but still pulling them out from a side and backyard garden. I keep pulling them out, but they keep coming back. The PA garden has sticky vines in every inch.... and I got midge at both places......tonight's task is to trim down an evergreen shrub that is about 9' tall, 9' wide, it blocks too much sun from roses.....I have an outdoor gym. :-) Have to kill this vine that choking roses:...See MoreDiane Brakefield
