Comments (17)That sounds about right for the fragrance. I have my plant of it because of an interesting connection. A number of years ago, a friend who owned a specialty rose nursery had a customer come see him. The man asked if he could get a rose propagated then told him the story of the rose. The man was a musician and had played at Iowa State, meeting Dr. Buck. They discovered they shared not only a love of music, but also of roses. Dr. Buck took the man back to his greenhouses and showed him his roses. To commemorate the meeting, Dr. Buck gave him a plant of Earth Song. The man had moved it many times over the years and said now the plant was in decline and wanted to repropagate it. My friend called me to ask if I could help, and I told him to have the man bring cuttings, which I would then forward to Sequoia Nursery for propagation. He did, as did I. Burling at Sequoia rooted three plants from the cuttings. I kept one and brought two back to the nursery. Unfortunately, the man never returned and my friend didn't get his name or number. I know every plant of any variety is all from the same original seedling. However, this one is special. Not only is it from that original seedling, but this one was also shared by its creator with a fellow rose and music lover out of friendship. To me, that just makes it even more special. Comments (11)Obviously Robert has a stain of blackspot that gets after Carefree Beauty, but rootman does not have that strain (yet?). CB is resistant in many or most gardens. Austin's The Generous Gardener and Teasing Georgia are resistant in many gardens, and they have the luxurious flowers you expect from DA. However, these are very big plants that are basically climbers or 8' shrubs here--probably in PA too. Some more Buck roses that are easy-care in many gardens are Earth Song, Prairie Harvest, and Quietness. These all give prompt, heavy repeat bloom. I also recommend Mother of Pearl, which is descended from Carefree Beauty but has a better flower....See MoreGrowth of own root Earth Song?
Comments (104)Jim, don't feel too sorry for me. I really do have way more roses than I need, by my choice! I will admit that in most ways I am practical, but not in that way! In all honesty I thought my teenage grandsons would be able to help me more than they have been able to. They are good helpers, but their Mom and Dad are keeping them busy this summer. One thing that I have observed about your roses and other plantings, is that you don't seem to have more than you are able to manage, and they really are very beautiful and healthy looking. I'll remember that tip about the water and fertilizer....See MoreWhat are the differences between Earthsong and Carefree Beauty?
Comments (9)Earth Song is the better rose, IMHO, and here's why: 1. In a front-to-back, wide rose bed which is 2-3 rose bushes deep you would place Carefree Beauty at the back of the bed if you were graduating bush heights from front to back, right? Wrong! Carefree Beauty has an arching, cascading growth habit, in spite of its ~4' height. The flowers are carried just about to the ground due to the arching growth habit. Most of the bush's flower output will be obscured by the rose bushes in front of it. As a bush in a single bush wide rose bed or as a stand alone bush, Carefree Beauty will work wonderfully. As a back of bed bush...no! Earth Song will work excellently at the back of a rose bed, with its 5' height and upright flower presentation. 2. Earth Song's color and flower form is both a richer, deeper, more vibrant pink color and a more elegantly formed flower. Carefree Beauty's flower is very nice, but blousy, and the petals, especially the inner most ones, are disorganized when fully open 3. Fragrance is always subjective (nose by nose), variable from garden to garden, and often bush age related...more mature bushes often push out more fragrant blooms. Carefree Beauty is basically scentless. Earth Song has fragrance. 4. Both bushes can get black spot, in spite of Carefree Beauty's designation as an Earth Kind Rose. Earth Song is the huskier bush. Neither one is going to die out due to a black spot outbreak, but I give the nod to Earth Song for more vigor, and therefore more disease resistance. Earth Song is harder to find, but well worth the effort....See MoreNancy R z5 Chicagoland
