Underdeveloped Buds / Bloom Failure
Comments (18)Hmmm maybe I coo them back on. :) So far, I've not had the experience of losing blooms post shipping, but maybe it's because I don't give them a chance to drop. Generally, I leave a flower or two for a week or so if a new plant comes with one, but then I take them off and give the plant some time to get settled into it's new home. I like my plants to have healthy, uniform foliage and a good start on life here before putting much energy into blooming. There have been a few I couldn't bear to disbud right away... I got a Princess K Rei from plantmaniac on Ebay and it came loaded with blooms and buds. The plant was small and nearly dwarfed by gorgeous flowers. I kept telling myself I should take them off, but waited a month before having the strength to do the deed. Since then, the plant has grown by about 30% and is working on another round of buds...just barely visible along the stem. Thanks for the thumbs-up on the light shelf. It makes taking care of the plants easy because I can move it away from the wall to get at both sides. My thought was that as the plants grow it will be difficult to get them out over the top of each other and I'd hate to break flowers moving things around overhead. Those are "daylight" bulbs in cheap fixtures from Home Depot - the bulbs cost nearly twice the price of the fixtures, but the violets seem to like them and that's the important thing. Most of them have nice flat growth patterns, so it looks to me like the light is sufficient. There are a couple...Arabian Nights (another Lyons) which seem determined to grow upright (bottom shelf, center right) and Apache Sunburst (Munk from PJ's Plants N Things on Ebay, also bottom center but on the left). They are both immature plants with new growth coming on, and I'm hoping they lay down over time....See Moreuh-oh, what the heck? Pennylane blooms
Comments (7)Barb42 and this morning is telling me not to panic... LOL! I should have taken photos when they started to open. I swear, those things were 1/2 a dime in size at the time, so I rushed out to take photos the following morning and thought hmmm, at least they look a little better, maybe 2/3rds the size of my baby band Special Occasion once they start to fully open, but not 1/10 size like they originally were. Here are 2 photos. That bud-flower on the far upper left is actually much larger than what I originally saw, I promise I am not exaggerating. Here is another photo of how every single of those buds originally started out as. You see they all started to open at this tiny miniscule size. My young climber is huge but its beginning flowers so tiny hence the panic. I actually had to highlight the flower because you can barely see it because it's so tiny. Here is what the mature size of Penny Lane is supposed to look like....See MoreOh Holy Cow! Maryott's Lord of Riches bloomed!
Comments (12)Jackie, Absolutely stunning flower! I can see why you are so excited! There aren't enough good things that can be said about Maryotts. I have been ordering from them for several years, and have not only never been disapointed in the plants that I have purchased, but have always been absolutely thrilled with the generous bonuses. I made my fall order late this year, so only have one scape coming up on mine... might get to see Volusian Spider if the weather holds. It will be thrilling if I don't have to wait until next year! Thank you for sharing your pics! Julie...See MoreCould not believe my eyes, buds, buds, buds!
Comments (34)I am having to agree with you Katya last year I couldn't cover up any of my roses for the winter due to the snow arriving here in Oct!!!! And my nearby garden centre had ran out burlap. I also was going thru a fun time with pulled muscles in my arm, shoulder and upper inside the leg. So had to go for therapy. Came down with a nasty head cold during xmas. I was having a fit thinking they all had died on me but they proved to me how tenacious they really are!!!! Not one rose died!!!!! And you should see them now. Buds galore on the shield, the campfire, the at last rose, my newest blaze rose and the double knockout pink. My Always and Forever rose is getting lots of leaves on it and is slowly going from red to green. My Strike it rich rose has a big bud on it and my chinook sunrise is so healthy. Only one that didn't was the Lizzie rose but it was having issues before the winter even came. When it died on me I got a coral dawn to replace it. And like wow had no buds on it. Now is getting all kinds of them on it. The one lady that lives a door down from me in the building we are in cut them all back for me since I couldn't do it this year. Thanked her for it. In fact one year I gave her a big bloom off my Always and Forever Rose in a fancy jar. Went on to get 4 more rose blooms off it....See Moredianela7analabama
