Perennials New England Gardening Daylilies

Daylily foliage malformed. What's wrong?

This happened last year too. I divided it the year before. Could it be morning frosts? Weather has not been unusual. Nothing extreme at all. This is Jolyene Nichole fwiw.. I had an extra division that lives in a pot in the garage for the winter. It looks just fine.

I'm going to see if I can find pictures from last year to see how it bloomed.

I have had some do that too, but they bloomed fine.

Um, I had a bit of a horror show when several of mine became infested with some insect or another, resulting in swollen buds and deformed blooms. Some sort of gall mite. Ripped out long ago, but I still mourn the loss as they were delicate and graceful, not remotely like most of the lumpen and garish daylilies I have at the allotment. Called either Golden Chimes or Corky. I miss them. Can't say I noticed the foliage being affected though so don't take my dire moans as indicative of anything (other than the usual garden whining).

When was the last time your daylilies got divided? Like any other perennial,if daylilies begin to decline and bloom less, ( especially if the clumpsn have become very large over a period of years) it could mean that they need dividing. There are other factors, such as, do they get enough sun, is your climate a stressor,do they get enough water,etc. but from what you said, it sounds as if they might simply need dividing.

I used a generic 'Avid' this spring. I did a couple of applications about a week apart. You could also use 'Merit'. Treating the plants in the spring is much more effective than starting later in the season. You could also use Bayer's 'All In One' or '3 in 1'. These products contain systemic insecticide, fungicide and fertilizer. You can also find them at most of the box stores. 'Avid' and 'Merit' are more commercially available. You should be able to apply all with out harming bloom. With all sprays, it's better to spray after the plants have been watered and in the cooler part of the day. Ed

Thanks Jan! Local dl gardens, sigh, oh I wish! Unfortunately I live in the middle of nowhere (almost). As best I can tell the closest ones are 4-6 hours away. However, I saw the link to Daylilies on Ice on another thread and see that there are some in MN, so at least I can look and drool online, and order some that should be good for my area. I think it's funny that I have had a few daylilies for 10 years, but last fall I rearranged a lot of my perennials and suddenly this week, as the daylilies are coming into bloom, realized how awesome they are and how I need more! Of course, I also need more irises, and more clematis, and more hostas, and more..... Ann

Hello all, Got a few pictures to share...Yea I got it figured out. Isn't it kewl..love my garden junk..lol...DH felt sorry for me..Ya see I was working and fell and kinda of hurt a rib and my fore arm..Really really nice bruising going on..Not to worry with a few meds all is fine..as long as the meds don't wear off..LOL..Trellis is what your looking at by the way..the black rod iron..he sanded,painted and put it together for me..Have an clematis going up it ..hopefully I just love this..Hopeing to grow some tpye of vine up this too..so it looks like an umbrella..Please don't look at the mess behind it..Was a deck there..took it out last year and haven't gotten around to do anything there yet.Heve to move my close line and then move around alot of the gardens..Then just put down some slate..ya ya thats all..LOL and YES I want my close line BACK.. Sorry this isn't the best picture..first time it's bloomed for me.Only know it as an Trout lily. Yes we behind all of you..thats zone 4..LOL Can't you just smell them..Hummm..spring..=) Anita ..Hugs hun...hope all works out for you.. It looks like spring sickness. Check out the description in the dictionary of the American Daylily Society. (daylilies.org/daylily-dictionary/spring-sickness) It doesn't kill the plant and the affected fans will eventually grow out of it. It's not gall midge as that insect only affects the buds.

Awesome info. Thanks! The article doesn't offer solutions but glad to see acknowledgment on this. I was suprised I didn't get any search hits.

I recalled that I gave a friend a division. I am going to ask her if hers is doing that. Although she has so many she may not know where it is.

I have some every year that do this. They don't like the warm/cold of spring and get "spring sickness" as Nancy above described. Not a problem.
