Conifers Northwestern Gardening

My favorite plant in my garden, today.

Most of us hard-core gardeners probably have a different favorite plant every week. As of today, in the gray, rainy Willamette Valley, mine is Calocedrus decurrens 'Berrima Gold'. Such an incredible mix of various shades of gold and chartreuse, with orange branch tips!

I can see how it would light up a garden. My option for something like that would be Thuja, which the deer devour. I’m envious!

I have my next to last orders planted in pots and in partial shade - the next order to come will be the very last one - what a sad day that will be! I am planning a very larger parterre bed with birdbath in the middle to house these roses once they get ready to plant in the ground, along with all the others I have ordered the last couple of years. Will call it my Vintage Memorial Garden......it wont compensate for the huge loss of Vintage, but will be a place where I can enjoy them all together.....planning to have a vintage looking garden shed/grandchildren playhouse constructed, a hanging swing......Wish they would find some extras and have just one more release......still cant believe they are closing. Yes Hdd, I have taken pups, im getting quite a collection of pups...LOL Im looking at scattering some round the garden soon as im finding little hidy holes round this place where i can put some to make more room in the brom house. I have had friends ask me to sell some and to them I have done so.I do some swapping also to build a wider collection.Ive started putting little price tags on them for when i have friends over and one day soon i will have another sale and invite them all round...even trying to get up the guts to have a "bromeliads for sale today" sign at my gate...lol...but im not ready for that at all The one you say as two tone i have gone out on search for that tag as i know i bought it from ebay with a tag and it says AF 45...which to me means Allen freeman 45?...dont know what the 45 stands for though!I love it all the same anyhow I reckon you could be right on the rain cloud one!I love it Hi Paul, thats right, there is no sun damage not at all...mainly due to there being NO sun up here in the tropics with all this ruddy rain...LOL...but on days of sun there is definately no sun damage. I am starting to see little areas of broms that are just starting to lose a tad of colour but i dont mind that at all just popping in to show a few more pics that i said i took 1.Stars n bars and Africa maybe? 2.Heart Music, Allen freeman hyb and gespacho 3.Hyrogliphica 4.Hommage and cherry day 5.group shot 6.group shot 7. group shot 8.group shot 9. and 10. are first attempts of chucking a few in new garden beds...looks a little silly and boring but maybe one day they will be better

Thanks, Lucy, yes i do have alot to be happy for. :) Theresa and Karyn, the 3rd pic is a rose. i dont know what type. all i know is it has been around a very very long time. My grandmother grew it and now i do as well. It has bunches of small double pink flowers and the plant has a very rambling vine like habbit. The leaves are very small as well. its like a climbing minature rose or something!!! Hummingbirds visit my clerodendrum everyday... i never get them in pic because the are so fast!!!

St. Maartin??? I AM PACKING MY BAGS!!! My favorite island, Milan. It is so beautiful. I love both the Dutch and French sides. You have some really amazing culinary geniuses in your restaurants. The food was so unbelieveable and the beaches were awesome. I have to get back to your island. My hubby has never been to the caribbean. I will have to surprise him with a trip one day. There used to be a family restaurant, in their home, on the way to Orient Beach. They grew a lot of their own veggies and herbs. Everyone else was interested in the food, I asked for a garden tour!! It was at the a top of the hill before going down to the beach. their food was wonderful but the garden was smashing. They both gave up high stress/big income jobs in the states to start this restaurant and I often wonder if they ever succeeded.

the bottom limb on the left.. does it go under the mulch to the trunk???

is the plant on irrigation... why ...

too bad you had to plant it so close to the fence .... you might want to move it and give it a few more feet over the decades ....

hope we can see more of your collection ... thx for sharing...

@artinnature What a stunner! Had to look it up for info - as in - might I have room for one of those? Short answer - sadly, no. But I learned it’s also known as Golden Incense Cedar, is slow growing 6’ tall x 3’ wide in ten years - maybe 30’ tall at maturity so it’s not a huge cedar! I love the bright yellow & gold colors in the midst of all of our evergreens here in PNW. I’ve noticed several Forsythia already blooming out up on this north side of the Columbia River - early I think! Any down your way yet?

Favorite? Hmm, that's tough this time of year as I have nothing as showy as that cedar. Are there any local (Seattle area) nurseries that might have that?

I think I'll pick something that is not showy at all right now. It's a climbing Monkshood I've been nursing for a few years. Initially planted in what turned out to be a very bad place, couldn't compete with the heliopsis, moved to a better, though not great spot, then lived in a pot for 2 years to rehab. Finally strong enough to replant out in the garden last year. Limped along, even made a couple of flowers. Just noted that it has put out some early growth. (Doc Frankenstein voice): It's ALIVE!. :o)

SB, I might suggest checking out either Swanson's or Wells Medina nursery. Both carry a superior selection of conifers (as well as a bunch of other good stuff).

I will try to share more pics of my collection. Uploading pics is infinitely easier on my phone than on the laptop, that's what I'm doing now.

KW, Forsythias were blooming in downtown Salem last week. I have Show Off Sugar Baby but my garden is tucked up against the cooler, coast range foothills, so no blooming yet.

SB, I got Calocedrus 'Berrima Gold' at dancingoaks.com, down by me, but their inventory currently says "zero". They are open to newsletter subscribers for "Hellebore Weekend!" this Saturday and Sunday...I'll be attending. Should be a good time as they have many hundreds planted in their display gardens.
