Med Pink with Yellow Stamens?
Comments (13)I have grown Basye's Purple for over a decade. Randy is right about the rugosa heritage. It rises to five feet in a shallow rose bed with clusters of five blooms to a spray at the end of short stems. The blooms are single, purple, fragrant and short lived. Once the relatively disease free plant (in my climate) starts blooming, it continues to the end of the season. However, compared to other plants in my garden, it is a late starter; the leafing out process may run a month behind other plants at the beginning of its stay in the garden. One of my plants is placed in an array of roses including the china Buttercream, Route 66 and Joasine Hanet. The other is in a bed by itself with minis at the bottom including, Erin Alonso, Surprise Surprise, Smoke Signals and Iced Tea. It needs little pruning except for the removal of dead wood. I think you will like it. Mine were obtained from ARE. JimD...See MoreBest Purple for SoCal Valleys?
Comments (8)I'm not in your area, though I do live in California where I've gardened for the last 30 years. I live in the San Francisco East Bay area, where summer temps are c. 10 degrees warmer than in the city of San Francisco, and we receive 3-4 months of annual continual drought. Summers here have temps more often in the 80's F. than 90's F. I've only grown one purple rose that I've been happy with, because it blooms more purple than red, the growth habit is lovely, wider than tall and slightly arching: Forestville Purple Pom-Pom. It thrives where 'Reine des Violettes' did not. I was pleasantly surprised when it bloomed so early, near where Glendora has not even formed tiny rosebuds yet . Forestvillle Purple Pom-Pom' has a lovely fragrance. and it bloomed fully in mid-March even though it had outgrown its pot and was root bound. I planted it near the front of a rosebed where it has lots of room to spread, and where it receives some filtered shade in the afternoon to keep it from crisping. I really love this rose!!! Thank you to Jeri Jennings who sang its praises to me after I complained that Belle Sultane blooms more red than mauve in my garden. Lux...See Moresuggestions for a pillar?
Comments (14)Jeanne, Freckles and the other cirrhosas can get quite large. Mine has not however since I did not know whether it would be winter hardy here and therefore planted it in a pot and placed it against a south facing brick wall to serve as a heat sink for it. Works great in the cooler months but wreaks havoc in the summer. Sachow, don't worry about not being clear. I just wanted to make sure that I was understanding what you were trying to explain. As I said previously, I am no rose experts so didn't know about climbing roses and their pruning habits. In that venue, I am a newbie! :) As for Allanah, it is listed as a type II on COTW (linked below) and as a type II on Chalk Hill's website, and to be quite honest I have treated mine as a type III in my garden. In our zones, we could probably treat it as either and still not have an issue with it. As for your pillar, I think either Allanah or Solina would look great and contrast with the purple one you have already on it. Huldine would also contrast nicely with it so the choices are yours. As far as having a third one on the pillar, you are definitely talking to the wrong person since I tend to cram as many plants together as possible! Here is a picture of Allanah in my garden and the color in the picture is pretty true to its color. It is in a westerly exposure and doesn't seem to fade for me. I also have Solina but last year was its first summer in the garden so my experience with it and fading is limited. Here is a link that might be useful: Allanah...See MoreWhich plants, trees, bulbs, vines, roses, and shrubs are fragrant?
