Does anyone know why my hardy hibiscus blooms look washed out?

I have a candy crush hibiscus with bright pink vibrant blooms. I just noticed today that all the new blooms looked washed out . They are all lighter in color a pale pink . I'm not sure if it's because we just had non stop rain yesterday all day and temperatures were in high 60s ? Or if somethings wrong with them?

How many years have they been in your garden? Are you careful deadheading seed capsules? Most of my hardyhibiscuses are seed-grow from one I bought many years ago. the seedlings range in colour from pale pink to deep pink. Modt have the darker ’eye’ but some have no ’eye’. One of the deep pink ones is very, very large. So my first guess is there are seedlings mixed in if your planting is a couple of years old.

I just bought them this year from a plant store minors. I bought it as a 3 gallon I believe and they have all been the same color until today. I also just noticed some of the blooms are smaller to

Hi Gloria, If you'd be interested in some pink ones, I always have lots of seed for 'Disco Belle Pink'! If you'd like some, remind me in late September, before the swap. I'm trying to get ready to hightail it out of town right now for my annual trek down to the Four Corners, and won't remember any of this by the time I get back! Mine are about 8 years old now (I think), and this year they have very obviously started to die out in the middle! They might be to the point where they need to be replaced with new ones, but before that I'm trying to clean out the old, dead stems in the center of the plant to see if they'll revitalize and grow back "into the middle!" By next year I'll know if it's gonna work! Unless there's some recent development, there aren't any yellow hardy Hibiscus. The yellows are all tropicals that you'd need to keep inside over winter. Yes, the old dead stems stay unless you lop them off, but I always put a stake up next to the spot where they are so I know they're there. Mine has struggled this year, but I'm surprised it lived at all, to be honest. It was pretty pitiful when I bought it. I don't know if it will get large enough to bloom this year, and honestly, I'm considering digging it up and putting it into a container to see if I can get it to grow better. I had about 10 different varieties and cultivars in SC. They were late coming up, but bloomed like crazy all summer and put out lots of seeds If you just tuck it into a place where the foliage can be ornamental and forget about it, one day you'll look and find huge, gorgeous blooms. Well worth waiting for.

I do not have one but since you live north of the areas where it can be grown, try growing it either as an annual or in a container that can be brought indoors once night-time temperatures reach about 40 degrees F. No frost "needed". https://kensnursery.com/product/misty-pink-hibiscus-mutabilis/ It will loose leaves if exposed to frost and may also experience leaf loss when brought inside due to reduced sunlight. Down here, it "dies out" and develops new wood in Spring. The only way to tell if your proposed location will work is to monitor conditions in there one winter or try with a well mulched shrub planted in the Spring, maybe on a southern exposure that gets sun during winter days... If someone near me can grow a bougainvillea planted in the ground for years and thru 13F, anything is possible. ;0)

Here as promised are some pics of my ducks and chickens. Papa Duck aka " Big Boy" This is Mama Duck aka "Meep" ( that's the sound she makes) Here are the two babies that are left about 8 weeks old . Clipped everyone's wings yesterday Here are the Grand old Boy .....he is the father of most of my chicks and a couple of ladies he is escorting around the property. These are some of my chicks .....about 11 weeks old ( all hatched in an incubator ) but I was not particulary successful . I put in about 40 eggs each time and got 2 chicks each time , a total of 3 batches of 40 eggs for 6 chicks ..... and here are 5 of the 10 chicks hatched by hens . Not sure why I am getting so many white ones with a blue father and mostly blue hens but that is what I got this season . Nancy you would be hard pressed to eat one of these chickens . They are bantams and have so little meat on them it isn't funny. I have them more for entertainment purposes really . We do eat the eggs but I love their feathered legs and feet and the papa Rooster is hilarious when he runs . Looks like Charlie Chaplain running away from you . All he is missing is the walking stick. LOL ! .

Blooms which have a very short lifespan, such as hibiscus syriacus, can be very variable. I have a couple of these - a Lavender Chiffon and a Bluebird, and I see a lot of variation across the flowering season. And this is in mature, well established plants. Young plants can be fairly anomalous - Lavender Chiffon is especially unstable with variation in colour and number of petals. The ephemeral flowers do change over the course of the day and can be sensitive to environmental changes. I wouldn't worry overmuch as this is a new planting. The foliage looks healthy.

But this isn't H syriacus. 'Hardy Hibiscus' refers to that species in the UK but in the US it means H moscheutus.

ooops, so right, Floral. I admit to knowing b***er all about moscheutos. Still don't think there is much to worry about though. I used to grow a few abutilons ((abutilon x hybridus, abutilon x suntense) which were also variable, especially in sun or by the end of the day. The flowers were variable in size too.

Of course, it could well be wild speculation on my part (wouldn't be the first time) but I am not really seeing anything about the OP's plant which might make me think, 'oooh, well dodgy'.

it is not uncommon for flowers to change color from the moment they open.. until the moment they rot off the plant...

the color change would be even more apparent at dusk.. note that pic taken in full blinding sun at mid day.. wash out also... try going out there in the evening... they wont look anything like they do in your pix.... its all about how your eye processes and registers the light.. in the olden days.. a camera nut would take about aperture.. how wide open the camera eye is/was....

imo.. this is part of the enjoyment of gardening.. every new day.. is a new mystery.. not every observation is an emergency to be FIXED...

but we can sure have fun talking about it...

of course.. in the olden days.. we didnt have the WWW.. so we just walked around the yard talking to ourselves..

people talked.. lol .. a lot of pointing.. and telling the kids to stay away from the nut down the street...
