Topsy Turvy Tomato Variety
Comments (10)I picked up a young Celebrity Tomato Celebrity is normally a quite big plant, much bigger than the average determinate variety. Instead try one called Patio - it is usually available where plants are sold. Even right side up you still have the problems of too little soil and the high water and feeding demands. If you are growing to grow one right side up then anything other than a small flower pot will give you much better results. I realized how they got the tomato to grow like you see in the commercials.... They grew it right side up, and then flipped it for filming. Yeah it sure is a rigged commercial. In previous discussions many pointed out that they must have tied ripe tomatoes on it too since no plant ripens and holds at perfect all that many tomatoes all at one time. *wink* Dave...See MoreWhat variety of tomatoes and melons would you suggest to try?
Comments (8)As far as cherry varieties--Sun Gold and Sweet Chelsea--you can't go wrong. Like they said above, mixed cherries sell quite well, as do heirlooms packaged as a group of colors. Far as watermelons go, go for the babies, especially since you're close to metro areas. I'm in farm country and even here, the double or single serving ones go well. Sugar Baby, Peace (Fedco), Minnesota Midget, Sweet and Early are awesome, even though 2 are hybrids. Yet another hybrid, Ambrosia, once tasted will net you sales....See MoreWhat were your largest variety of maters?
Comments (13)My biggest have been Neve's Azorean Red, Persimmon and some I can't recall right now. I did nothing special, it was just the genetics to get over 1lb each, sometimes much more. As a rule I grow for flavor, not size. Of course I do despise the tiny little tomatos that are too large to be bite sized, but too small for a burger slice and too much work to skin for sauce :) As an aside, does anyone sell Neve's anymore? It never was the easiest to find and I always got it from trades....See MoreTomato Varieties - (need a little help ^^)
Comments (4)I was wondering what varieties of tomatoes out there are: 1. non-hybrid 2. cherry variety 3. and if its not too much trouble; whether the listed varieties are determinate or indeterminate. Answers: 1. Literally thousands. 2. Probably several hundred. 3. Tall order.... It would probably be easier if you have specific varieties you are interested in, that you list them. Or here is a database that lists info on over 2000 heirloom and open pollinated tomatoes.
