Name That Plant!Perennials

Grass ID please

I bought a mixed seed bag from the Lawn to Nature program last spring and spread the seeds around in this area of my yard. This year, in that spot, this grass is coming up in several healthy clumps. The seed mix does not seems to contain any grasses.

Google lens is not helpful. Any ideas what this is?

Yes, I know about the Lamium. I have already dealt with Japanese Stilt Grass and Garlic Mustard in the area.

Hi Rory. Your grass kind of looks like a Panicum or Elymus species. Grasses are much easier to ID when they are in flower. Looking closely at the leaves and stems requires close scrutiny. If you can take a few photos of the charecters like in the following photo, it would be most helpful. Knowing the county of the state you live in would help also.

Thanks for your input Tsuga! Yes, I see what you mean. The bluestem also seems to have a fuller look to it. This grass I'm trying to ID has a sparser appearance and def.coarser or broader blades. I also can't tell if little blue has this, but the unknown grass has a lot of curly blades. It has spread a bit on the property. Seems to like dryer areas....scrubby patches...hard to get really dry here as it's a cove forest but this grass likes gravel and sun!

No, I think you're right...it looks more like a Dichanthelium sp but I can't find a description with the purple flowers...you'd think this would be part of a description....it's a fairly distinct feature? I can't really see rosettes on either species you mentioned but I'm probably missing something? If it helps this was found in a limestone/meadow/forest edge setting. Thanks!

A grass (maybe switchgrass?) Was planted in that area several years ago, but this looks so ordinary I'm not sure if it is not just a weed. I mulched around it just in case it is worth keeping!

Thanks for the extra photos Rory. There isn't anything that I can see in them that leads me to identifying it. The grass family Poaceae is the 5th largest plant family, with over 12,000 species. There are over 50 grass species in my county that have been observed on i naturalist, and I know the true number is much larger. When I use google lens on your photos, I get mixed answers. Some suggestions were Canary Reed Grass, Phalaris arundinacea, Bromus inervis, Lolium multiflorum (Cyperaceae), Setaria pumila, Setaria villosa, Glyceria maxima, and Arrhenatherum elatium. I can't make an ID based on all the pics, so I hope you can post a pic when this grass does flower. I know some people who are much more knowledgable about grasses, but I would need a more precise location, it's a matter of protocol.
