Why is my Turkey Fig only producing new growth from the ground up?

Hi,

I have a 6ish year old fig tree. It was planted in the ground 5 years ago. I got a handful of figs the first year in the ground. 3 years ago I had a bumper crop. 2 years ago I covered it for winter and then also cut back the branches. There was NO new growth. I did not panic and left the tree in the ground. Last year, I thought there would be no new growth, but lo and behold, the plant grew from the ground up and I even get a couple of quarts of fruit.

Because of the mild winter, I did not cut back the branches.

This spring, there is tons of growth, but it is ALL from the ground up.

What gives?

Any suggestions on the best way to handle this?

I live in Zone 6, Central/North NJ.

Thank you!
