Some stems have prickles…others stems don’t? Seriously, is that normal? I’ve never encountered this before, but I’m totally new to the rose krewe!

Has some fragrance, nothing overwhelming

I propped it up with a chair since it was laying down in the yard, then I cleaned it up a wee bit, and now it’s putting out quite a few new canes! Got all the grass out from under it and added some mulch, and it already looks better.

New canes are long, leggy, and seem to need some support. Possibly a climber?

Possibly own root? I did some digging (literally) to see but it’s still hard for me to tell. Guess I’ll have to wait for blooms on that one particular new cane to determine if it’s a sucker.

It’s such a lovely rose. It was growing through the railing of the wooden deck when we moved here. Unfortunately we lost the deck due to Hurricane Ida and don’t plan to build another, so I’ll likely replace the chair with a trellis or something pretty to support the rose.

Please ignore how gross the area is where the deck used to be. We are currently replacing our roof (ourselves 💪🏻), so that has most of our attention. One day this will be a nice area that I don’t purposely avoid! 😅 One project at a time, and lotsssss of grace.

I’m sure Belinda’s Dream is happy to have her space back now that this rose is propped up, LOL.

Ooooh, that is some looker. You seem to have gotten some very fine roses with your house.

Many roses grow fine on their own roots, so this one could conceivably not be grafted. If the new growth well up on the stem looks like canes coming from ground level or below, chances are they're all one rose (not root stock).

Root stock varieties are limited, and chances are just a few are used for the roses commercially propagated in your area. If you get to know what those rootstocks look like, you'll be able to differentiate between growth of the grafted part of the rose and rootstock suckers. For example, in my part of the world most shrub roses and climbers are grafted on 'Laxa', a form of the dog rose. Its suckers are quite different from those of most of the roses grafted on to it, the chief confusion being if the grafted rose is in the Alba class. Albas have dog rose in their ancestry, and their growth is similar to that of 'Laxa'. Generally, though, they're easy to tell apart.

Jackie, if you're still following this thread, here is a photo I found of reddish new growth on the mature plant that doesn't belong to me; this photo dates to August of last year, so the red cast to new leaves isn't only in spring, although it may be more likely then: That is about as red as I see anything on the plant itself. I did see some of this reddish new growth on the plants I rooted from cuttings this spring, but now the larger of my plants is putting out lots of leaves that are green from the start: Something I meant to ask about is the reddish stamens. My flowers pretty much always have a bright red tinge to the stamens, but someone familiar with 'Pax' said they didn't think that was characteristic of the plant. In the first photo you posted, it does look a bit like the stamens are red, but I'm not sure if that's just the lighting in the photo, or if your flowers normally have red stamens. Thanks, Virginia

ROSA RUGOSA ALBA is the granddaddy of all white roses. I normally don't like single roses but this one was love at first sight (and smell). I saw this species sport growing as a security hedge in front of a Cleveland Park townhouse in Washington DC. Several things stood out about RRA and it remains one of the most beautiful white roses that I've ever seen. First, the sheer size of the blooms was astonishing, and they literally covered the shrub. The fragrance was intense and could be smelled from yards away. The unusual wrinkled foliage didn't have a speck of disease (if you want a no-spray white rose then pick this one). Would be just about perfect except for one thing: OMG the thorns! I got a crash course in what rugosa thorns look like that day. There wasn't a spot along the canes that wasn't bristling with needle-like thorns. It was obvious the owners were growing this rose as a sort of living barb wire because any intruder who tried to move past those shrubs would be ripped to shreds in seconds. I was told by the owners that in the autumn this rose has the enviable habit of showing blooms, hips and glowing gold foliage all on the shrubs at once (the leaves on rugosa roses apparently have the enviable habit of turning autumnal shades of gold, fiery orange and scarlet in the fall). COLONIAL WHITE (aka Sombreuil) is another gorgeous white rose. The official registration name is Sombreuil but the ARS really does need to change it ASAP because it still causes confusion with Mlle. de Sombreuil, a little known Tea rose. Colonial White IS NOT a Tea! It is an aggressive, winter hardy, Wichuraiana Climber that IMHO belongs in every garden. In contrast with the wicked thorny canes (Wichuraiana) the flowers are very delicate and captivating. They open from blush pink high centered buds into large, ivory-white flattened rosettes packed full of wonderfully fragrant petals. Colonial White like all good climbers blooms along the entire length of its whip-like canes that are easily trained up a support (wear good thick gardening gloves or else!). I've had the canes on other climbers break on me but those on Colonial White seem to stay supple a heck of a lot longer. Repeat bloom is very reliable, and the leathery dark green foliage shows good natural disease resistance. Colonial White can also be kept pruned down into a large shrub. The following image of Colonial White is by Missy_GardenWhimsy at the Hortiplex database. ROSE-MARIE is my favorite white rose. Unfortunately this white sport of the English rose HERITAGE has become next to impossible to find. It was only wildly available for a few years and now may be headed towards extinction. Well not if I have anything to say about it! Rose-Marie has a lot going for it: graceful growth habit, grows well on its own roots (and roots easily), lovely foliage (if you spray), and unlike the previous two roses the canes on this English rose are only lightly studded with widely spaced thorns (thanks to its Iceberg ancestry). Best of all are the medium-to-large beautiful creamy white flowers that look like they belong growing in front of an English cottage. Rose-Marie is almost always in continuous bloom. Her only real faults is the need for spraying (black spot) and the short vase life of the sinfully fragrant blossoms. Frankly, I'd really like to give David Austin a good talking to about this rose. I'm so frustrated by its lack of availability that I've begun to root cuttings from my single grafted plant. If availability doesn't improve then in a few years I'm going to start giving this rose away FOR FREE! Other beloved white roses include Climbing Clotilde Soupert, Coquette des Blanches and Fair Bianca, but I think I'll wait until later to write about them. Here is a link that might be useful:

This is a great example of HOW to post enough and good enough photos of a rose you are trying to ID! (instead of just one bloom!). Thanks you. You did a great job cleaning it up, too. Gorgeous rose. I presume that when you say "multiple flushes" you mean that it re-blooms all summer and into the Fall? So, you have a lovely white climber which re-blooms - YAY!

Have you noticed whether or not it forms hips? If there are any on it, a photo of one of them would be good too, as well as a close up or two of some of those buds.

To answer your question about thorns, sometimes newer canes take a while to develop them - I would not worry about it at all - less thorns not a problem!

Getting it a structure to climb on is a good idea - otherwise it looks like it will just send out those long canes and fall over again.

It will be interesting to see if the blooms on the new growth match all of the others. Even if they do, it might be rootstock which is now on its own roots, the scion rose long gone. That would not be a problem - it would be a lovely re-blooming climber anyway. I don't know who it is, but someone on here probably will - there are a lot of amazingly experienced folks who post on here.

Your rose reminds me of soumbreuil but mine is young and I am not certain.

The bloom form says ”Tea” to me, but the growth habit, foliage and panicle style says modern, so my guess is ’Snowbird’ Climbing.

Bloom form is not right for 'Sombreuil'. IMO. (I'm assuming people are suggesting "Sombreuil of commerce" the Wichurana climber, aka 'Colonial White', not the true Tea 'Mlle de Sombreuil'.)

The leaves are very much like those of 'Snowbird' and that was the first thing I noticed, as they are fairly distinctive. The flower form is also within the realm, though I was trying to figure out how large they are -- looks like the ones when there was a deck are maybe medium-sized blooms, which would be typical. If it is a climbing 'Snowbird', lucky you -- one of the best!

I was also wondering about the size of the blooms, compared to what look to me to be larger, and perhaps more double, ones on the mature Snowbirds. However, of course roses are so variable, and lack of care may make them have smaller blooms too, I guess. The mystery rose's blooms do not appear to be self cleaning - does anyone know if Snowbirds are not also? Anyway, I think it is Snowbird, with the differences due to local issues. Congratulations, Madison, on having such a lovely rose! HMF says the climbing version gets up to 12' high, so keep that in mind when you get a support for it.

Catspa, what a lovely, lovely rose. My unicorn rose. I'm not an expert on Snowbird, but she was the first rose I thought of when I saw the mystery rose. And I did notice the leaves several times. Leaves are not my forte, either. I hope we are correct, and this is a rare climbing SB. Diane

BenT, we have a lovely 1926 bungalow, built from the cypress of three “old houses” (whatever is considered old in 1926). Set on the Mississippi River and moved once (a little further inland) in 1936 when the levees were redone. We love this old girl so much. The projects never end, but we are enjoying making sure she’s always in her best shape! New roof definitely makes going into this year’s hurricane season less stressful. The building shown in some of the pics is an apartment attached by a carport to the actual house. Here is the front of our home. The descendants of the family who built it had a family reunion and visited in May ‘22, and we got to meet Mr. Eddie—the youngest and last surviving member of the Daigle family who built our home. He grew up here, and it was surreal to meet someone part of our home and its history 😁.

The bloom looks a lot like 'Gloire Lyonnaise' but golly, there are SO many white roses.

It may very well be growing on its own roots. Have you any idea at all of how long it might have been there?

Jerijen, I’ve reached out to the previous owner since he absolutely loved roses and I’m guessing he planted this one as well as the others, but I haven’t gotten a response. Hopefully he will know something and get back to me. Fingers crossed!

Can 'Gloire Lyonnaise' display the lanky (climbing) habit of this rose? Or is there a climbing form of it?

@Madison Roussel The photo with hand does help give some perspective. My estimate is that it something like a 2 1/2" to 3" diameter flower, more or less medium size. Your zoomed-in photos of the blooms do give a view of the recepatcles and glands on the pedicels -- not inconsistent with 'Snowbird', but also consistent with other varieties.

It reminds me of my Angel's Camp Tea. The centers can be yellowish like yours, or more pink. Sometimes just white.

I think my plant came from Jackie Day who used to be a partner in the nursery in Pass Christian , MS, Countryside Roses. How much sun does your plant get? Mine was in part shade but fairly upright.
