Thinning Vanderwolf Pines
Comments (5). I have never pruned it and didn't know you could do this to pines to promote inner fullness. ==>>> you cant bet on it it wont... fill back in for sure ... though it might get fuzzier on the periphery .... there is no way to make it thicker inside... all pines shed there needles within 1 to 3 years.. and interior needle loss is NORMAL ... pruning of the new growth on pines is VERY TIME SPECIFIC .... its called 'candling' ... they are conifers.. and there is a conifer forum should you wish opinion other than those here ... but frankly.. w/o a pic ... we cant help very much ... intro to conifers at link.. i THINK there is a pruning section ken Here is a link that might be useful: link .. look for 'candling'...See MoreVanderwolf Pine turning yellow on ends
Comments (13)Jeff in Denver, That looks like typical winter dessication to the needles and to the buds. It appears the tops of the trees suffered the most which sort of correlates with what I am thinking. Often, the bottoms of the trees are buried in snow and this insulates the needles/branches. Where I see needles in a cluster where some are green but others are brown, that looks like, typical, dessication. Also, now you are going to see brown needles amid the branches especially in the center of the tree. That's going to give you a false sense of something else is wrong. Those are needles that are shedded, annually, and nothing more. What to do... Look closely at the branches where the entire tips are dead and see if there are any buds at all beneath the damage. If you find one, clip an inch or so above... if no buds are found, clip off that branch. Some branches that are larger you will most-likely find whorls of buds below the tip clustering of buds... trim the deadened material off to the above the set of buds beneath. I think, with time, you'll have nothing to be concerned with. Dax...See MoreVanderwolf's?

Comments (2)Yours is not dying but this one is (please, someone tell me it has a chance, pic taken today) and I have no idea why. 3 years in the ground always looked fine then it went downhill quickly starting about a month ago.. If I had to guess, I didnt plant it on a high enough mound. My "soil" is very wet as leeches and mole salamanders live in it. It also could use more sun. A buck snapped the trunk of this one to the ground 2-3 years ago(it was about 5-6' tall). It is starting to pick up speed in its growth. As long as I make the planting mound tall/big enough, my conifers live. From front going back. Abbotts Pygmy, Sester Colorado, Spaan's Dwarf, Vanderwolf, Canaan Fir, Hoopsi. The Hoopsi certainly lives up to its name and then some. None of the conifers in my front yard get as much sun as they should(pic is taken facing North) My house will start about 5' back from bottom of above pic, I had about 40-50 dump trucks of fill dirt brought in as last summer the footprint of my future house was full of frogs-sorry frogs. That is an American Basswood, Behind/to left of basswood is a 90?' Norway spruce, Sorry for hijack, took some pics today....See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
