Small shade tree for the backyard facing east in southern califor
Comments (19)Deciduous choices: 1. A small native tree, cercis occidentalis (Western redbud). Gets to about 15 feet. Usually grows as a multi-trunk. Usually blooms better inland where it gets colder. Attracts hummingbirds. Doesn't bloom heavily near the coast where I live. Rounded shape and leaves. Well-behaved rootwise. Mine is 5 feet from our pool. 2. Chaste tree (vitex agnus-castus). Great, reliable summer bloomer, even near the coast. Attracts hummers and butterflies. Roots well behaved--ours is also 5 feet from the pool like our cercis occidentalis. To about 15 feet. We've grown ours as a multi-trunk. Some people like to keep the tree trimmed as a large shrub. (You can see a small portion of the Western redbud in the foreground to the left.) 3. Forest pansy redbud (cercis canadensis). This one blooms better (at least in my location) than my native redbud....See Moreplacing orange and lemon tree in a east facing window?
Comments (5)Yes, an East window will be ok, but you will not get the kind of growth that an West or South window can proivde.. If you are ok with a healthy green tree with very few buds, fruit, and elongated growth until next spring, then it will be ok.. if you want phenominal growth, then adding lights is a must. Comments (2)You'll need to provide more info before anyone will be able to provide useful advice. WHERE are you? What zone? How much light does your balcony receive? North balconies generally don't receive much light but some folks are fortunate enough to receive a good deal of reflected light from a lightly colored neighboring building. If you have tall trees shading the balcony, a large overhang or another balcony above yours, then you would likely have very low light which would greatly limit your options. Btw, tulips are full sun plants in the north. Even if you could keep them through a winter, you would not likely receive enough sun to "charge them up" for the following season. You might, depending upon your zone, be able to use them as disposable plants though....See Morechloebud
