Weigela, Ninebark or Elderberry for this spot?
Comments (9)I my area Alberta's seem to always get dead spots on them eventually and why I have steered clear of them. Big Maples can look nice, but I wont risk getting one with those awful helicopter seeds...lol..I dont want 1000's of maples. I have an Elderberry and in bad winters they will die to the ground. BUT THEY GROW LIKE A WEED! Just like a Butterfly Bush. Mine every year gets over 6 foot tall no matter what. I wouldnt suggest it for your front of your home with how well structured you have everything. I am sure you will be dissapointed in it. I enjoy mine located in the back yard and gets a ton of sun and has the room to do whatever it wants. Might also constantly reach for the sun out front, would be my guess. I have a smaller variety of dark leaved ninebark that gets about 5 foot tall. Sorry I am not sure what type it is, but I know it is not a diablo which I believe gets bigger than mine. I have never had a mildew issue with it, but could be due to it gets alot of evening sun also. I think it could be a good choice for that spot along with the smaller variety of dark leaved weigela you have mentioned. My final comment would be to consider a laceleaf weeping Japanese Maple for that spot if you are looking for that color scheme. But looks like it could be a little tight for that spot and you might have to make that spot a litte wider from the house. BTW everything looks great!!...See MoreStrange black sickly stems on (Diabolo) Ninebarks?
Comments (3)In my experience it is caused from powdery mildew which can cause witches brooms. Mine get them frequently. I just try to remove them as they appear. Hope this helps! Rhonda...See MoreYellow leaves, black edges, black spots: why?

Comments (8)some seasons it a losing battle to control PM ... its not really going to kill a plant .. but you arent going to be spending a lot of time gazing at its beauty.. lol ... i am njot sure one of those white blobs wasnt wooly aphids ... https://www.google.com/search?q=downy+aphids&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiEurqb2ubNAhUMET4KHR2zAeAQ_AUICCgB&biw=902&bih=745&dpr=0.9#tbm=isch&q=wolly++aphids how old it the 9bark.. when planted ... can we see the whole ... all kinds of things attack stressed plants ... and often ... if you dont address the stress.. it really doenst amtter if you remove all the secondary issues ... e.g. if this is a recent planting.. and watering it improper ... then you better fix that first ... i can tell by your manicure.. your a new gardener.. lol ... just try to remember.. not everything has to be fixed in the garden,.. this isnt no disney movie ... we only go to those lengths.. when the plant is being significantly damaged ... and a little PM is not signif.. in my world .. and bug populations ebb and flow over the years ... ken...See MoreMolly D.
