Comments (4)'Quits surging for the most part when I'm actually mowing grass,' What it does when not cutting grass is technically not of any concern. Specifically, it is running as-designed. The later 2-cycles were forced to run leaner than they should because of emissions laws, so they surge without a load on the engine. When the engine starts to slow because it's cutting, the reduced speed allows the spring-loaded air vane to move, opening the throttle. Still, you might try increasing governor spring tension to pick up a few RPM which sometimes smooths out the surging and makes it go into 'power mode' (smooth hum) sooner. Find the white plastic wheel with knurled rim at the base of the air vane on top of the carb. Turn the wheel 4 clicks clockwise and see how that works. It is not possible to adjust it enough to over-speed. In fact, as long as the mulch fan and blade are attached, you can manually push the air vane all the way over to wide-open throttle and hold it there. It can only run up so far until the horsepower requirements of the two 'fans' meets the max power of the engine, probably 4000 RPM or so. Too fast to use for mowing, but much slower than the engine can potentially run....See MoreWhy is my lawn looking brown?
Comments (4)pbx2, We've had a couple of warm days followed by rain and thunderstorm here as well! Could it be fungus? I am wondering because it seems like there are some green blades as you zoom in to the spot! I initially thought I put too much fertilizer, but from my search, it does not seem to me as a chemical burn... I tried the little trick to see if we have sod webworms (two tablespoons of dishwashing liquid and 1 gallon of water), but all that I could see is earthworms... Please help!...See MoreNewly seeded lawn - sparse growth
Comments (11)>>I was worried that the high sun around noon would dry it out too much by the time 6PM came around so that's why I have 4 instead of 3. I tend to just glance at it from my window and see if it has a darker, wet color. If it works for you, I'm thrilled. If you're watering four times, three times, or twice, it's all good. >>If I'm to repair the washed areas, can i walk on the area now? With a 4000 sqft area, i'm bound to step on some area to get to the areas that need repair. You'll have to, so I'd say yes. Just be careful, gentle, and try for minimal disturbance of areas that are sprouting. Any sprout you unseat is most likely going to die, but sometimes they surprise you. >>And I still haven't received a direct answer on this but I'll ask again - should I rake or just spread topsoil over the new seed? Maybe even roll it too? Raking is fine if you want to, I didn't. Any covering up to a quarter inch is fine, so top soil (or peat moss or compost) would work fine and it does help hold moisture...but it's not absolutely required. Don't exceed 1/4" coverage, and shooting for 1/8" is usually safer as any accidents still aren't likely to go over a quarter. You can roll if you want, although covering the seed will also improve seed-soil contact. Most people recommend rolling...I never did it. If you're detecting that there's a wide range of tolerable conditions on just about everything except minimum watering, you're right. :)...See MoreNewbie in Houston - St. Augustine questions
Comments (4)Large lawn in the Heights? Wow. That's something I don't see after growing up there through high school by 290 and 610. I suppose that Scott's Organic fertilizer from Lowe's or Home Depot would be sufficient at a minimum. Who cares about the weeds? Just mow high (3-4 inches) and you will be fine. That's what we do at my mom's house few miles from you and it's the greenest lawn on the block during the winter and it's hardly ever watered during the summer. What kind of garden? Mulching is the best way to conserve the water and improve the soil dramatically. Look for tree trimmers around Houston and ask if they would dump a load of wood chips. That saves you a few hundreds of dollars. I don't really know where in houston to get compost for free. As far as I'm concerned LETCO (Living Earth Technology) has the best compost in Houston for bulk. It does help a lot. One cubic yard per 1000 sqft is all you need. It's the delivery fee and fuel surcharge that suck so if you have a truck or a trailer with sidewalls, it's great. Fortunately, it's only one time application. All you have to do is feed the lawn with organic fertilizer every 3 months. Nothing to it. There is two organic places in Houston... Wabash feed store off Washington nearby Memorial Park and Southwest Fertilizer off Chimney Rock (i think) outside 610 loop not too far from the Galleria. My preference is soybean meal but I don't know how much they cost there. I think I saw it at Southwest fertilizer but that's over a year ago....See Moremacranthos
