No problem, Ark. Thanks for the help regardless. As far as the Yellowwood, I did a small "test run" on three seeds. Filed a spot with fine sandpaper until I saw white. Did three seeds and all of the swelled when soaked in warm (100F) water than I allowed to cool overnight. I then put them in moist paper towels. One did show a radicle after three days with no stratification. I also figured out the best spot to file them. The seed look like tiny little beans, and the scar on the side, which is where was presumably attached to the pod, is slightly off center. The root emerges from the end closer to that scar. So to avoid potential damage to the embryo if using the filing method, I will file the opposite end.

Fairweather Gardens (very good G.WD. rating) has 'Perkins Pink'. Quite a few wholesale suppliers offer it, but Fairweather is the only retail supplier I see without extensive looking. ForestFarm (excellent G.WD. rating) has offered this under the synonym 'Rosea' name in the past. They don't currently list it, but that doesn't mean they don't have one or two stuck back somewhere. They often do have small quantities of unlisted plants.

What can I plant that is deer resistant? This list of deer resistant plants was compiled from Gardenweb postings and other sources. As you can see from the follow-up postings at the bottom of the list, RESISTANT is the key word. Deer can be quite the gourmets and yours may still be partial to some of the plants on this list. Deer that are hungry enough will eat everything bare from the ground up into the trees as high as they can reach. Many of the plants on this list are poisonous or medicinal. If a plant smells bad to you when you crush the leaf or stem, it probably smells just as bad to the deer. (P.S. Don't forget that rabbits, squirrels, groundhogs and other animals might be just as destructive as deer in your garden.) I was all ready to quibble and say that I thought Four-O'clocks were Mirabilis, not Clarkia, when I saw you'd got Mirabilis listed as Four-oclocks under annuals. The joy of common names! Have you ever grown clarkia? I understand they do OK here and are really attractive in part-shade. They also devoured a barberry, and hostas are out of the question. One day last winter we looked out our window and saw a doe eating birdseed out of one of our bird feeders! What's tasty is apparently a regional issue, also, so you might try checking your local (in my case, Maryland Cooperative Extension's Web site) extension service for a list of plants that are "deer candy" or avoided by deer in your area. I've had them nibble on Japanese white spiraea (Spiraea albiflora) and the usual tulip and hosta foliage. They prefer my neighbors grass. She has it professionally taken care of every week. I wish she would stop. Our yards are attached and they wander up this way frequently. Moved from California to Virginia last year, so much to learn! Deer are different in different areas. For example mule deer in CA usually won't touch impatiens, but white tail in VA LOVE it. I spent a lot of money to fence in my back yard. The only sure way. (I hope) Also, they won't eat my iris, but they eat certain daylilies, but not others.

Hi Ed, I live in metro west. Marie and I have met at plant swaps and we've both hosted them. You are welcome to come dig up a tree (or 2) as well. My neighborhood is upland and has well-drained, sandy loam. Apparently the subsoil is "sand and gravel as far down as you can dig" (was told this by a guy at the Board of Health when we were discussing septic systems). There is even a sand pit about a mile from here. There are several Cladrastis kentukea in the neighborhood, apparently the previous owner dug up a seedling back in the 60s and it's now a big tree. Since I removed about a gazillion Norway maples from the back yard, the yellowwood seedlings are popping up everywhere. I'm not sure about messaging in Houzz? Supposedly it can be done, but I haven't messaged at all since Houzz took over.
