Thanks Kate--I guess I've been very much on the fence about whether they'll tolerate the cold here, will just have to see I think. The flowers look so gorgeous I think I have to try anyway, so I was going to put in 4-5 and see. I'm essentially zone 6 in the backyard, so maybe I'll have success with them if you have. Do you winter protect? My neighbor did lose some HTs from year to year but he planted the bud union above ground and didn't winter protect. My Austins always seem significantly hardier and I was hoping these, although marketed as HTs, were more mixed lineage and would be hardier too. The beds are a bit elevated, which hurts cold-tolerance but helps keep things well-drained. But I can bury the bud unions and throw on some bark mulch or leaves in the fall, which may help. Okay, Peter is officially on the list, and I think I MUST have Liv and Yves Piaget--the flowers look too wonderful to pass up. Every weekend the ground stays workable I keep fixing up the beds to accommodate more roses...so now I have room for another order from Roses Unlimited!

Michael, I've found that white roses are difficult to photograph, but at least they are far easier than the red ones, which I don't even attempt anymore. Heritage was a natural for planting near that path, since it's almost thornless. Yes, those are geraniums. This is the first year I've grown them, and they have done really well. My grandmother always grew the red ones, but she never had any peacocks! Adrienne, the china roses are really the best adapted rose class for here. And that works out just fine, because I like them a lot. Spice is a special china to me, because its blooms last a long time, and have a lot of petals. Carol, I can see why you have so many Austins, because they are memorable roses. I really enjoy the two I have. Thanks, Jean, Carla, & Leslie! devon_gardener, I don't spray either, and my Heritage hasn't needed it anyway ... at least in my garden it hasn't. Very healthy for me. But as for rust and powdery mildew, that's something that is not prevalent in my climate for roses (except PM on Clotilde Soupert which is the only rose I've every grown that gets TONS of it). Randy

Well, I built Greg L.'s bin to his specifications. So I used roughy 3 foot 2x2s. There's no reason you couldn't go higher. Although there are possible issues to consider. One is your season. You want to let the plants grow at will and get bushy well before frost kills them. Another point is that I didn't find nearly as many potatoes in the upper 1/3 of the bin. Now part of that was probably my laziness at covering, but I do believe at some point you get diminishing returns. Possibly also the added weight of the soil would inhibit tater growth down below. All that leads me to continue to recommend the potato bin as designed. However, tires solve some of those problems. Of course tires are only so wide so you give up lots in the number of seeds you can start. Hehe I could talk all day on the various methods and materials used to grow potatoes vertically.
