Do you have favorite rose gloves?
Comments (8)I'm just so glad I found gardening gloves in general. I've spent many winters in the barn not wearing gloves thru winter, getting huge painful breaks in the corners of my fingers from the cold. I tried all sorts of fancy leather, and contractor working gloves and just couldn't feel thru them. This year I started buying the $2 gardening gloves that you get in CVS pharmacy, and I LOVE THEM. I wear them constantly outside - in the garden, and in the barn. Thorns will go thru them if you're picking up your rose and moving it, but otherwise they offer enough protection. But they aren't arm length! But they are worth their weight in gold....See MoreMy favorite rose, do I have to cut off these?
Comments (1)Yes. It will just get worse. Sorry. The good news is that cutting them off will probably stimulate the growth of new, healthy canes. Kate...See MoreWhat is your favorite color rose? Do you grow only fragrant ones?
Comments (18)I'm with Seil and Ben - nothing makes my heart go pitter patter or my wallet go "poof" faster than a picotee, mutable or striped rose, the more high contrast the better. After that I'm drawn to the "oddball" colors of russet, parchment or lavender (or best all three together, like Distant Drums or Koko Loko). Dark dark burgundy flowers also zing something in my soul. As for wafting, even without my poor nose nothing really wafts very far in my dry climate. We don't get wafting of hyacinths and lilacs in the spring even though I have 100's of the former and 3 well established bushes of the latter. Peonies you have to get up close to smell, and the same for lilies. I'll get a vague "pleasant smell" from an area with over 10 Stargazer lilies blooming, but even my son with the hypersensitive nose doesn't gag at the smell. It just dissipates too fast. I never knew Darlow's Enigma or Marie Pavie were supposed to have any scent at all, and even my daughter with a good nose shrugs when presented with a bouquet of those. I like fragrance when I can get it, but I look far more often than I smell, as far as roses go. Cynthia...See MoreDo you make doubles of your favorite rose rooting, or buy another?
Comments (18)Desert, I take cuttings in late winter, early spring. When I am pruning my roses for the spring, I will take a piece of the cane that I cut and have it be about 6 inches long or so. Make sure they do have at least two or three or more eyes on the canes. I shove the cane into the ground about two inches or I sometimes use potting soil. That is it. I sit back and watch them grow. Make sure they stay moist. Now, not everything will grow as Seil states, but I have had very good luck with Candice, Lavender Crystal and with Brother Cadfael. I figure since all of my roses are own root, that I have a fighting chance since they grew from/on their own roots already. I know that my Wedding Cake is extremely difficult to grow on its own root....See More- 2 months agolast modified: 2 months ago
