Here is a salt water alternative that has fresher smelling and non-irritating water. It has very low chlorine and acid consumption and costs less to maintain. Why is America still in love with chlorine (salt chlorine included) as the main sanitizer/oxidizer? It's our chlorine addiction that has led to higher asthma rates compared to other countries that limit or don't use choline. Chlorine also make asthma worse. After learning that the last Olympic pool built had a combination of ozone for oxidation and uv for sanitation we switched over to ozone and ultra violet pool systems. Because neither system leave a residual in the water we add a mineral sanitizer every six months (just the cheap one like the frog or poolRX) and keep about 0.3 ppm chlorine in the summer months. (We used to keep it between 2-4 PPM.) In the winter there is no chlorine in the water. My hair/eyes and skin feel great when I get out of the pool. The water doesn't smell and tastes like fresh water. I use way less acid than before and the pH is easier to balance. The most important thing is that my wife's asthma doesn't flare up when she swims now. Also, I don't have to worry about my kids breathing in or absorbing harmful chloramines. I run the pump at about %45 for about 7 hours and save a ton on electricity too. The UV bulbs, I am told have to be replaces every few years, but come with a two year warranty. It will cost me about $160 for both bulbs, and the ozone uses a $40 uv bulb which will also need to be replaced every three years or so. We have an in-line tablet feeder to we put a chlorine tablet into every other week during the summer and the mineral cartridge goes into the skimmer basket every six months.

I have a salt water pool with an Aquarite chlorine generator. It generates for a few hours, then stops with all the display lights coming on, including high salt and inspect cell. I shut the system off for a few minutes, then on again, and it works just fine for a while, then it stops generating and all the lights come on. I have recently cleaned the cell according to instructions. The limiter on the pcb gets very hot just before the system shuts off. Can't figure out why this is happening. Don't want to have to buy a new pcb. Any ideas why this is happening?

I am so glad you posted this - we are having the same problem with some chairs that we purchased - we decided the brown stuff was rust after we took them out and they leaked all over our travertine and we had to really scrub to get the stains off.......I will keep tuned to this thread and check out the chairs mentioned. First, the water must be tested for chlorine, total alkalinity and pH levels. There is a testing device to test the salt content but usually most salt chlorine generators have it displayed in the control box. Calcium hardness should be checked as well. The total alkalinity and pH are very important. If there is no chlorine reading, not worry. If the generator is operating properly and the salt level is correct, it will begin making chlorine. Your green pool may not necessarily be a chemical problem, it possibly could be a filtration problem. A clean filter allows for proper water turnover and proper flow through a salt cell. Of course, a clear pool. A operation manual is necessary. Most manufacturers have it on their respective sites. This will allow you to see if the unit is actually functioning. Be sure the salt cell is properly sized for the volume (gallonage) of your pool. A model number on the unit will allow to search for this info. Most salt cells should be cleaned annually. If not cleaned, it will not operate properly. Did the serviceman give a reason why tabs were used? Just adding salt for the sake of making the water soft makes no sense. The pool has a set amount of salt to be added based on it's volume. Too much or too little salt impedes the unit from working. The water will be soft with the correct amount of salt. A chlorine generator produces it's own chlorine with the aid of nearly pure salt. So there is no reason for the tabs or any chlorine product if a salt chlorine generator is in place. The convenience of these systems is to eliminate the need to stock liquid or dry chlorine products. It's producing chlorine to sanitize your pool. Because these systems produce sodium hypochlorite, it will slowly drive up your Total Alkalinity and pH levels. These levels must be maintained to allow the chlorine produced to work at it's maximum.
