Comments (11)thank you so much harvey for your response. i should have done more research before creating these things. they weren't cheap and took a while to make. i said earlier i made "a few", but i actually made 14. i was embarrassed to admit it if it was a bad design! i had seen people wrap the plants with tarps, and read how important it is to keep them dry. so i figured i needed an enclosure, but i didn't think too much about airflow or moisture. as some people bury the entire tree under the soil, i figured that would keep the branches just as moist as keeping it in an enclosure. but i guess that is a different kind of moisture. i was hesitant to punch holes in the enclosures, in case it is better to keep them closed to keep out rain/snow, but maybe i'll raise them a couple inches off the ground and let the airflow come in from the bottom. and keep a couple that i don't raise just to test the difference. any other thoughts are greatly appreciated....See MorePics of raised bond beam connecting to retaining wall?
Comments (8)Glad the pics help. Regarding the tanning ledge...yes we like it. If I had young kids I would definitely want it, but not at the expense of a large shallow end. My dog LOVES it! The bubblers were something the pool builder suggested but really I don't find them that great...most of the young kids we've had over play with them for a couple of minutes and lose interest. If I had known, I would have left them out. For the wall...maybe you could do tile in the poll and transition to rock for the retaining wall part but put the transition where there will be plants to hide it. Once our landscaping grew in it changed the look completely. Judy...See MoreRaising my hand for backsplash help (pics)
Comments (14)Yay! This is great, thank you! Just to clarify, the tiles are from left to right: Horus Art Bianco Antico, Walker Zanger Gramercy Park Heirloom White and WZ Gramercy Park Pipe Smoke. They all are crackle tiles (for some reason the WZ heirloom white doesn't look very "crackly" in the picture. So far I am maybe thinking to do the combination with the WZ white framed above the range (yes, with a curve to mimic the hood, bethohio3!) and the pipe smoke everywhere else. I do worry that the pipe smoke just by itself will be a bit dreary (rhome)--and blend in with the surrounding wall color too much (cienza). As an aside, Sabjimata, I love your .23 cent tile in your kitchen! I am using that in my mudroom and master bath!...See MoreHow to get started on gardening , I have the attached raised flower be
Comments (6)That's a bed with some potential. "Plain dirt" can mean anything. Your best strategy would be to get a (low cost) lab test done to see what chemical problems it might have and at least get an experienced vegetable gardener to have a look at it and see what the texture looks like. Big difference between a mass of sandy clay and one of loam with good tilth. Winter is a good time to make these assessments, so you can be ready by spring. Does it drain well? That is, if you stick a hose on it, do you end up with a big puddle on top? Is the soil uniform? That is, if you dig down in it, does the the soil look the same all the way down? I've seen beds where the previous owner put a few inches of good looking soil on top of a foot or two of really trashy soil. When you dig down, do you hit any masses of roots that come, perhaps, from your neighbor on the other side of the wall? These are simple things to check that can save you a lot of grief later....See MoreK G
