morning glories and japanese beetles
Comments (14)I have found that what the JB prefer varies from yard to yard, which lends credence to the view they are attracted to stressed plants. Stressed simply means the plant is emitting a chemical signature the beetle homes in on, it doesn't mean a plant has to be at the brink of death. Example: I hear lots of folks say they like the leaves of grape vines. I have a relative who has the largest JB infestation I have ever witnessed. He flicks literally hundreds into a bucket of soapy water daily. It doesn't help that he lives next to a golf course filled with their grubs and his neighbor has one of those yards planted with everything other than grass for them to eat. Anyway, he has 25+ year old grape vines and the JB don't touch them. They do go after his raspberries. Don't touch his tomatos or any old fruit trees, do eat his dahlias. Of course it doesn't really matter whether the JB only go after stressed plants since the JB are going to know which ones those are before we do since we can't smell the chemical signature the plant is giving off ;-)...See MoreMorning Glory Sport ? Comments (4)Karyn you are right on the base I think... it appears to be mostly purpureas that I'm trying to kill... there are no Japanese style morning glories that I've seen, this doesn't have the hideously mis formed blooms nor the compound leaves, it's almost a perfect spider along the lines of a miniature spider day lily bloom. I think it's kinda neat if I do say so myself. lol I've already tagged the bloom and it is setting seed had a second bloom today on the same plant that was exactly the same so it's not a one time thing caused by something other genetics. :) Can you provide a link Kylie? can't find it with google......See MoreOT- Anyone growing the Morning Glory Tree ?
Comments (47)Hello all, I grow the morning glory tree. It is not really a tree, but gets real tall about 6 -7 ft here. I have the lavender one and got a white one a couple of weeks ago. You cut them up in the fall like brugs and stick the 'sticks' in water to root over winter. Here in north FL they start to bloom in early summer. They love the full sun here. They do have hairy seeds but I just cut the stalks instead of collecting the seeds. Dee...See MoreChocolate Morning Glories
Comments (9)Wondered how it's working out, Cheryl. I had the same situation... chocolate was not setting seed, and over on the vine forum got the suggestion as Remy suggested here to manually pollinate, and I *think* I have a few pods setting seed finally... at least they look fat and sassy. Interestingly, the bright pink morning glory is still setting seed and giving me a pod almost daily. They seem so similar other than the color. Something I wonder about: I don't get a lot of pollen from most of the chocolate blooms (but always a few flecks). I don't go out there until after 9:30 so timing may have something to do with it, and I have not had to do anything with the pinks so I haven't had that to compare, but there was one chocolate that had a *lot* more white pollen to it, and I wondered if maybe the lack of pods was due to a scarcity of pollen in that variety. Oh well. We'll see what comes up when I plant these seeds (if I get any) next year. Hoping to hear if you ever got seeds to set. Terri :-)...See MoreWolf Grey
