If you've been reading about Milorganite and feeling a little skeptical about it, you can switch to an organic grain type of fertilizer like soybean meal, alfalfa pellets, or corn meal.

Otherwise, digging weeds out is a possibility; however, some weeds put down seeds extremely fast and would need a lot of weeding. I use a herbicide which is good on my particular turf which happens to kill weed seeds, too, so something like poa annua and Dutch white clover dies and does not come back from seed. If you're not in the south, that won't work for you, but there are other herbicides you can spray/spot-spray that will work. I keep my dog off the grass as much as possible for the following 48 hours when I spray.

If Milorganite is still Milwaukie sewage sludge based I wonder how they would be getting all of the heavy metals out of it now - it used to be that the cadmium warning had by far the biggest font on the bag. With it also explicitly stated that the product was not for lawns used by children and pets.

Lawn herbicides have been linked to cancers in dogs. Of course, this problem will be caused by certain ones. However any chemical formulation that doesn't essentially evaporate after being released into the environment during application will still be present 48 hours later.

But then if your home site is located anywhere in the western half of the country irrigated lawns have become a no longer possible indulgence anyway - Lake Powell for instance is currently shrinking in more than 40 ft. increments. With various western states on their way to severely restricting water consumption.

One example of getting rid of the bad stuff in the sewage is what they did in San Antonio. They back test upstream until they found the offending source, and then they fined them $1,000 per day until they tested "normal." The San Antonio River used to be home to several metal plating shops who were dumping acids into the river. Also it turns out the microbes at the sewage plant are sensitive to overdoses from lots of normal things. In San Antonio you can't dump milk or sugar into the system without consequences, so places like the Coca Cola bottling plant got fined as did a brewery and some dairies. Nobody in a small town has a budget that allows for a $30,000 per month fine.

Milorganite and heavy metals is old news....very old news! There are processes for successfully treating biosolids for heavy metals and most biosolids that are purposed as home fertilizers meet and exceed EPA regulations. Not only is Milorganite perfectly safe to use on lawns and around kids and pets, it is also safe to use on vegetable gardens and around other edibles.

There seems to be some conspiracy against Milorganite and other similar products. Biosolids and heavy metals were not bad enough. Now some states are concerned about polyfluoroalkyl substances. I've never used it, because I can get corn meal and alfalfa pellets cheaper. San Antonio, Austin, and Houston have similar products (Alamo Gro, Dillo Dirt, and Hou-Actinite), which I've also never used.

Another common type of organic fertilizer are the biosolids products such as Milorganite. These are processed sewage sludge products that are de-watered and made into fertilizer. They are very effective nitrogen sources. Some biosolids fertilizers have also been sources of metals, such as zinc, lead and cadmium. Metal contents are closely monitored by manufacturers but since these products come through municipal systems, zinc, copper and other metals such as lead are often elevated.

The EPA has published maximum concentration levels of any heavy metals that might be contained in biosolids used for agricultural purposes or any other type of manufactured fertilizer. Milorganite is well below these maximum levels.

Some states - WA state included - will not sell products that exceed these maximums.
