Is there a better white rose than Pope John Paul II ?
Comments (41)Ric-VA-commenting on an older post. I have both and maybe JFK/Pascali(lost the nametag, so don't know if it's jfk/pascali) . PJPII fragrance is not as strong as sugar moon, but it's so Amazing in it's own way and so is the flower form and shape. Planted near the front door and I can smell it every time. Got this one from a nursery and it was already a lush looking plant-probably bare root planted maybe from Weeks. Sugar Moon, got own root fro RUnlimited in 2017, this year the small plant is valiantly putting out new branches and blooming non stop- It is never without a bloom(love it so far), came through our bad winter without any diebacks-there was no winter protection. SM has an amazing strong fragrance and so is the flower- it blooms slowly and the slow progression of the bloom lasts atleast a week, and then suddenly it goes from looking like an HT rose to a peony. I love both and they are special in their own way and worth buying. JFK / Pascali great looking HT flower, very slight fragrance(hard to tell, we had non stop rain), lots of new canes. Need to watch for black spot...My recommendation is ofcourse-Buy both of them. In the white category-I also have Bolero(too small, have not bloomed yet), Iceberg(bareroot, 1st year, loaded with buds but has not yet bloomed), LilyPons(cute with pointy petals, can't detect any fragrance, flowers which started of small are are getting bigger), rugosa alba-intensely pure rose fragrance(can smell it across the yard-suburban), miniature white rose from walmart- unknown but a bloom machine....See Morelooking for a white rose
Comments (24)I've had Mme Hardy, and if you like the old garden rose look, it's a must have. Bear in mind, it will only bloom once in early summer, and the stems will be very short, and the flowers are the old type flat faced quartered kind, with a cute green button in the center. And, it will be a large shrub but will require much less care than your typical modern rose - less water, less fertilizer, less pruning, less spraying. The joys of the once bloomers. And, pure white except for the green button. Very fragrant. Reasonable disease resistance. For modern roses I stand by Maria Shriver. Exceptional fragrance for a white rose, and very pure color. I also loved the ivory color of French Lace, and fragrance, but bad blackspot and not at all cold hardy. Someone described it as freezing in the shade of a sunflower....See MoreMost preferred white rose
Comments (63)Kate -- Spent some time on HMF and it's a treasure so again, thanks for directing me there. Turns out I have zone issues with many whites so I must be careful. I'm Z5, which eliminates a number of choices. Wish I loved rugosas. Lamarque looks promising and HMF gives me hours of research to figure out how to plan and plant into my little plot, which is a 3-sided spur that extends past the garage, between the driveway and walkway to the front door -- more or less the shape of a computer mouse. It has a light post begging for a climber on the rounded end. I am thinking conservatively of going with an Iceberg there though I plan to explore a Frau Karl Drushki climber as an alternate possibility. Since I'm starting out, planning for height and texture is not so easy to grasp. I want to end up with a hedge that's a bit sculptural, has balanced texture (I favor double blossoms) and blooming. I now have White Simplicities (which were energizer bunnies their freshman summer but didn't winter over as promised) mixed with Winchester Cathedrals (which were late bloomers but so fragrant and delicate). I'm going for 3 more (newbie=slow) of another white that would marry well with those. Any additional suggestions from anyone would be most welcome....See MorePlease share your expereince with these white roses
Comments (15)Thanks for all the responses.I should have mentioned that I have julia renaissance,PJPII,gingerhill and joan fontaine.I had pennylane and jardins de bagaitelle and lost them to winter.I liked the blooms I saw on those two .I would like to know that some one had success with them in zone5 before trying either one of the two. I should have requested for the information on how badly the roses mentioned get affected by thrips and JBs .I didn't see a decent bloom on julia until fall and we didn't have too many jbs in our yard. As always I appreciate sharing your expereince and look forward to more of them. Thanks. Dana...See Moredamask_rose_zone9b
