I agree with the poster before me. Wait until your ground can be worked & plant the dafs in what ever stage they are. You may be planting only bulbs because the foliage might be gone by then. [Once the foliage is gone don't water them except may every 2 weeks.] Use some bulb food to top dress the hole once you have them in the ground. Plant about 6" deep. They will do just fine & I always give my bulbs some bulb food in spring just as they are poking up once the weather stays warm. This gives them a little extra energy.

I know this is a really old thread but I have only just started a veg garden this year. Living in Central Florida does have it's challenges I can tell you so I thought I could try some seed potatoes this winter before the hot weather arrives by March next year,which from what I have heard and read, will be their death.....they are Organic spuds (1 pound each of Russian Fingerling and Yukon Gold I think) ordered online back in October and only arrived finally last week (Dec) but no sprouts on any of them yet.....ugh! Ok so they tell me to put an onion/apple or banana in the paper bag to speed up the growth, I've got the onion in each now for 2 weeks but still nothing.....can anybody help here, really would appreciate your input as I'm desperate to get them in the ground before Xmas to have enough 'cool' weather time for them to grow, thanks :o)

You can pot up to a bigger container or cut back the tops hard and remove about half the root mass from bottom & sides & return to the same container with fresh soil. I think if I was in your area I'd think seriously about adding a water holding polymer to the soil as well. If soil is drying that quickly, you should be able to fasten a reservoir saucer to the bottom of your container ............. never mind - I just realized you said baskets. I guess you could buy containers & ditch the baskets. You just have way too much evaporative surface in baskets for your growing area. ...great for growing roots, though. Al
