Annual Begonia or Perennial Begonia?
Comments (23)That is weird Kyle. Rhizomatous (which rexes are of this type) are fairly easy. Are you overwatering them? Several of mine took a turn south due to the week I was at the convention in New Orleans. Most are still viable and some are putting out new leaves. These are the smallest pots and on top shelves. I've noticed over the years that plants I put on top shelves (begonias) often do worse than the ones on middle and lower shelves. I can only think that it must be warmer (heat rises) and causes issues. The other thing is not seeing as well since I could just be watering blind unless I take the tray down (I do that in one room - 9 trays in all that is a bit more work than I like). These photos are from March 12 as I have only taken a few photos of cuttings after that. I even got Escargot through winter this year! YAY! My 3 red rexes have never looked this good until I cut back on watering this winter. This big pot was started in September from 3 inch pots. 3 rexes, 1 U647, and Bashful Bandit in the middle. Sophie plants that I started over the previous winter and gave away several. Mary Bucholtz in the back, manicata in front plus several others. A Walmart or Lowe's rex a tray of small potted rhizos and rexes Teen Angel Miniperba (small cane), rabbit's foot fern, watermelon Peperomia, and goegoensis....See MoreBegonia leaves are turning brown on the edges and dying
Comments (3)What about Temps? The same thing happened to mine, until I set mine on a heat matt and warmed the soil a bit, considering the room they are in gets into the low 60's, and they were set by a window sill which can get pretty cold.. Do you think a drink of water combined with cool root temps could be the culprit? Mine is doing well now and new healthy leaves are emerging.... I hear many begonia can be very sensitive to room temps... Mike...See MoreI didn't think I liked the rex begonias but
Comments (4)There is no one place to find out about names and photos. I'd start with the ABS site (begonias.org) and go from there. There is an international database that has a lot of names and some photos. It has a link on the ABS site or just do a search for begonia international database. Plenty of other web sites as well but again - no one site comes close to covering everything. Another suggestion is to do an image search - rex begonia for example. The problem is there are a lot of misnamed plants on the web which is a pity but that is the nature of the beast. I have several hundred begonias and a lot of them have no names or the wrong names. Buy the plant for its beauty rather than the name. Then years later you may actually find a name for it. For example, our oldest begonia was a passalong plant to my wife and was simply named Angel Wing. Turns out this is a common name for a lot of cane type begonias. We've had this particular begonia for almost 41 years now and found the true name perhaps 15 years ago thanks to the web. Its real name is Corallina de Lucerna and most folks abbreviate it to Lucerna. Another plant I bought from a mail order place (Glasshouse Works) was supposed to be crassicaulis. It didn't look like crassicaulis from all the photos on the web but I liked the plant and it grows very easily. I gave it a nickname - Sprawler until I found the true name just a few short years ago - Bayberry Lane. So hang in there......See MoreBlack spots on begonia leaves - bacterial? Fungal?
Comments (27)I am thrilled to report that my red-leafed rex is doing fabulously well now! After several months of relatively slow growth, I moved it a lot closer to the window, and here's how it looks now. Maybe a month ago, I moved it back from the prime windowsill spot so other plants can have a turn in the brighter spot, but I think it would like to be closer again, it keeps turning the leaves to face the light, so I spun it a little for the sake of a better photo :D. I thought they were lower-light plants, but this one and the silver one really seem to like being right up in the south-facing windows. I am kind of shocked at how broadly it spreads out - those are my feet at the edge of the picture, it's a big plant!! Unfortunately, I nearly killed the silver one over the same time - I had a really hard time getting the watering right, so was alternating between drought and overwatering, but it is coming back now, so in a few more months, if I'm careful, it ought to have filled out nicely. I have not had any return of the black leaf spot problems, or leaf edges dying, since early last year....See Morepetrushka (7b)
