Big, bad landscape fabric...
Comments (10)"if I pull back the fabric every so often and add compost and peat moss isn't that acceptable" Easier said than done! My experience with it is that eventually weeds grow down through it making it hard to pull back and difficut to pull the weeds up without pulling off the fabric. Eventually dust and dirt collect on it's surface allowing weed seeds a place to grow. I'vr found a cheaper and better method is to use cardboard on the soil surface and cover it with mulch. You'll still get a few weeds but they'll be easy to pull. The cardboard decomposes over time and adds to the soil. Landscape fabric is always there. I've been in my home for 7 years. The people who lived here over 22 years ago put it down and covered it with river rocks. I think they must have cornered the market on them. Soil settled between the rock which over grew with grass and weeds. When I prepare a new bed I'm forever digging up rocks and landscape fabric. 22 years and it's still there. I would guess it's under half my lawn. Now I lay cardboard down and cover it with mulch and my beds remain relatively weed free. I get my cardboard out of a dumpster behind a Dollar General store and the mulch from the city, all free! Nothing better than free!...See MoreLugging rocks, lugging soil - Whose idea was this rock garden?
Comments (20)rofl... how do I get my rocks? I stick a pitch fork into the ground, and toss anything that sticks into a checken-wire sieve. 'gravel' is anything smaller than the palm of my hand, and that gets dumped in a pile for the paths. small rocks get piled to the left until I hit a bigger rock...then I pry the rock out, and add it to the wall. after you do this half a dozen times, you have a depression in the dirt. I add a coffee can full of worm castings and finished compost, a coffee can or three of water, stick a plant in the depression, and backfill the hole... oh, no, wait- that's how I prepare the garden beds ;) the rocks around here outnumber the insects....See MoreLandscaping ideas for bubbling rock feature
Comments (2)I actually have been using Fountec because my primary purpose is to help out the birds and Fountec is supposed to be safe.My water runs very clear with the Fountec. I only had algae stains on the support boulder. There's a natural depression in the stone that holds water and I only run the fountain for a few hours a day. I clean the boulder using a very small amount of bleach and water, but I don't let the bleach run into the creek. I just soaked it up. What is the bromine for?...See MoreLandscape project went bad! Comments (1)Remove weed barrier, remove river rock, add soil to grade, then lay sod. It's probably too much work to do that. I would just either double down on your rain garden project, or I would make that a raised garden bed....See Morejustcallmepool
