Comments (5)I'm sorry it took me so long to get back! I took some photos of the zinnias but my personal computer died and I haven't been able to upload them :( I actually didn't fertilize them at all, just a layer of spring compost. Maybe that's where I went wrong? I haven't had my soil tested but they are in a new bed I formed this spring by lasagna gardening. The soil seems to be rich, easy to dig into, and full of earth worms. My other annuals planted at the same time are very healthy and lush. I staked the zinnias that were laying on the ground. There are 5 of them spaced about 1' apart in a grouping, but some fell in the wrong direction. They're all still putting out beautiful large blooms, but the powdery mildew has turned the leaves into a nasty mess! It sound like I need to get some GreenCure! Thank you for the recommendation. I'll need to be more proactive next year, I'm still learning... I guess going through these experiences is a necessary evil in figuring out what works?!...See MoreMalus 'Jewelcole' Red Jewel - Fireblight and Mildew Resistance
Comments (4)You've got the typical spectrum of responses for this cultivar's resistance to fireblight. About half the studies give it somewhere near poor the other half give it somewhere near medium/good (not excellent). The nurseries could be giving you real info (from studies like the University of Kentucky research trials - they gave 'Jewelcole' a fireblight rating of good) or could just be trying to reassure you so that you will buy their product. If I had to bet, I'd bet they don't go around telling people how poorly any of their trees do with fireblight (so take their advise with a grain of salt). Fireblight varies a lot with climate, conditions, and other factors, so you are not likely to get a single unified consensus about any cultivar unless it's extremely susceptible or immune to a disease. 'Jewelcole' is somewhere in between, hence the varying ratings. Now it's up to you to decide if this cultivar is worth the chance. There are definitely cultivars with higher disease resistant ratings across the board. There are even cultivars with better disease ratings AND typically better aesthetic ratings. 'Jewelcole' has its positives and has pretty decent average ratings for for other factors (scab, CAR, mildew, leaf spot, and even Japanese beetle feeding). So are the odds right for you to place your bet (plant your tree)?...See MoreHow do I prevent powdery mildew from affecting my large Zinnias?
Comments (5)Ken....PM starts out on the surface of the plant tissue but very soon into the infection will send structures (haustoria) into the cells. That's how PM can result in the death of tissues. It's not merely a disease of the surface. Highlander, I have not tried the baking soda or milk treatments so can't speak to their effectiveness from personal experience. I can share my very positive experiences with horticultural oils, including neem, applied to the foliage. The oils do two things: kills the spores on the surface upon contact AND prevents the successful spore germination in the first place. Avoid spraying anything directly on the flowers. Read and follow the directions on the labels. I assume that you know the importance of practicing good garden hygiene in terms of your maintenance practices regarding PM. The spores overwinter in plant debris, old mulch, and even on the soil. I opt to avoid disease prone ornamental varieties in favor of resistant cultivars. That's my choice for all kinds of problem prone plants. But the vegetable garden is different. That's where I have to resort to neem oil or frequent syringes of water. I don't have and can't recommend any particular commercial fungicide though I know that there are many which are labled for PM control. But without all of the cultural controls in place, no amount of chemicals will be of much good. Hopefully, Zenman the zinnia sensei of the forum, will see this and share his expertise....See Morezen_man
