why do we like what we like...and will we always?
Comments (13)Hi Elmire, I've thought about this some too, and as I've looked through various pictures I've tried to define what I do and don't like. I tend to like flowers, period. What I like best probably depends on the distance I'm looking at the plant from. Up close, a frilly picotee edge is the greatest thing... but from a distance, a simple single flower probably has the greatest impact. I like big yellow centers and no visible centers, both. I like both singles and doubles, but overall I'd rather have more semi-doubles than anything else, and I like them even better if their petals have some waviness to them. A rose with a subtle color blend to a darker or lighter color on the edge appeals to me hugely... though if the entire yard were composed of those kinds of flowers, there would be too much competition between them. So just a few Mrs. Dudley Cross roses (or roses of those types), sitting perhaps right next to Duchesse De Brabant to help point out the sublime in Mrs. Dudley Cross. I have always liked roses, but less so the hybrid tea forms than their smell. The brief amount of time I had Belinda's Dream with the same form, though, I liked it plenty. It looks especially nice with roses of other forms in a vase. I liked the effects of the tiny Rose Rosette to add variety to a vase of flowers, too. Overall, if I had to name just one favorite flower form, I'd probably go with a rhododendron, especially those with a bit of a frilly and/or picotee edging to the individual flowers within the truss. I love rhododendrons, huge trusses and small ones both. Rhododendrons don't withstand drought well, however, so I wouldn't suggest getting started with them if you can't give them plenty of water during a drought. Oh, no, maybe I should have said the one favorite was a camellia, all kinds of camellias... And daffodils! The Ice Follies variety is pretty much a perfect flower. But peonies (of all kinds) can't be bested by any other flower! Oh, I forgot to say how wonderful the tiny-leaved karume azaleas look when they are covered in a blanket of tiny flowers. They make for spectacular arrangements in a vase too. I like flowers, period. In a mood to really look and appreciate, I can get excited with just a single bloom from a native woods violet. And at that moment, it seems that nothing could best the simple woods violet. I guess the real luxury is in having a good variety of flowering forms, and especially in having them at various times of the year, which roses and camellias are both good at. Though I do have one rhododendron that blooms a bit every fall. I can't think of any flowers I actually don't like, though irises are probably fairly low on the list. I have stronger opinions on garden design than on the flowers themselves. (I'm not into geometrical/formal gardens so much as very informal ones.) Comments (9)I went through the same thing...only reversed. I have a black range and everything else is stainless. I have natural cherry cabinets which will darken over time. Initially, I didn't know what to do for the DW and fridge. I guess that I could have done paneled, but I am not a huge fan of hiding the appliances. My decision was made for me, because I bought them at a warehouse sale and stainless was what was available on sale. Here are some pictures. It is kind of hard to get the overall impression, but I think it looks OK....See MoreWhy I don't watch deco shows on hgtv anymore...
Comments (109)The show that I really like is Bang For Your Buck. On BFYB the camera takes its time and actually shows whole rooms and details with a well-photographed and easy eye. No jarring editing. No dumb "reveal." The owners explain why they remodeled as they did, how and why they made their decisions, what worked and what didn't, etc. Then the designers come in and critique the rooms. Of course, they're supposed to find something wrong, so they always do, even if it's silly. But you actually have a serious discussion of a room by two separate parties. I don't actually care much who got the biggest "bang", but I've gotten a lot of decorating ideas. Love HouseHunters just for choosing the house I like best and guessing which was the one chosen. Some of the stories on HH are very moving. Unless, of course, it's some 20-something whippersnapper who whines about granite or looks at a perfectly usable bathroom and says "dated". In that case, like some other posters here, I yell at him/her to go live in a village in Afghanistan or Iran, where the toilets are literally a hole in the floor (or the ground). Sometimes we don't realize how great our lives are! As an English teacher and cranky grammar-nanny, I do blame HGTV for its cruel assault on our beautiful language. However, I'll spare the forum my lecture. :o)...See MoreLike Button
Comments (32)I still do not understand the point of "liking" a post or what purpose it serves, other than the OP of a post being able to say, "Ooh, look how many likes I have!" I participated on another forum where they added a "thumbs up" button (how original) AND a "thumbs down" button. The more "ups" one collected, they would be awarded the equivalent of a gold star by their user name. Lots of likes would net you multiple "stars" by your name. Too many "downs" and you got a series of red x's by your name until you were eventually banned. The atmosphere quickly turned sour and it became a free-for-all with everyone pointing fingers at everyone else and the thumbs themselves became the focus of the discussions in many, many, many threads. Immediately people began competing for the "gold stars" to see who could get the most. And other posters were getting banned simply because others disagreed with them or they held an unpopular opinion. The forum went from one where every poster was on an equal footing, to one where posters were considered "better" or "worse" depending on their "status" of stars and x's. It was ridiculous, childish, and became unbearably tiresome. This post was edited by jellytoast on Mon, Jan 19, 15 at 10:47...See Moresultry_jasmine_nights (Florida-9a-ish)
