Suggest colours / roses to match Benjamin Britten
Comments (8)I bought BB at a garden center by accident. The bushes weren't in bloom and somehow I I got it confused with Christopher Marlow. So now I have three of them. I do like it, very healthy. Mine has never shown much of the orangey tone that the catalogue photo has. It's hard to describe the color: a warm dark pink, not quite hot pink. There's a certain iridescence. It's not quite so tough to coordinate as you'd imagine. There's a design drawing in DAs catalogue that places it between Molineux on one side and Mayflower & Falstaff on the other. Plenty of contrast there. In my garden, BB has Mary Magdalene & Brother Cadfael on one side, and Munstead Wood & The Alexandra Rose on the other....See MoreCl Benjamin Britten vs Cl Gertrude Jekyll
Comments (3)I have Benjamin Britten, but even though left to itself to get 10-12 ft tall, I would call it a stretch to consider it a climber. It can be a tall shrub. For covering a 10 ft pergola, it would probably be too short if you are in the cool, coastal PNW. It blooms quite reliably all summer here even though the flowers are on the small side and fade rather badly from a bright vermilion to a watermelon pink. You might have a look at Polka, Night Light, Cl Sombreuil, Soaring Spirits, Fourth of July, Altissimo, Sally Holmes, or Westerland as alternatives. The spring rose shows are coming up in a few months. Perhaps you could visit one or more to have a look at some of the climber entries to see if any of them catch your eye....See MoreBenjamin Britten - another Austin mystery?
Comments (5)Benjamin Britten is one of my favorite David Austin roses in my garden. I have about 75 David Austin Roses in my garden (I just checked my spreadsheet). Benjamin Britten does considerably well for me without any type of chemical support. He blooms regularly in the hottest part of the summer (in full blazing sun). He's grows to about 6ft tall even though I cut him back to about 3 ft each season. I really like the orangeish red color. I have four of him in my yard. It's rare that I duplicate a rose. Comments (6)Hello Eweandbee - I just started growing Strawberry Hill and BB this past spring. SH is in the ground but BB came as band and he's still in a pot. Here are photos that might help you with the color question. Strawberry Hill - with some orange shading in the center OpenSH with yellow stamens A bud of Benjamin Britten which looks cerise in this photo (according to my computer). I agree with Malorena that BB has some orange blended into its version of red when it opens, but SH does as well. I've heard that BB can get as tall as in 5-6 ft in California but I've seen Facebook photos from the U. K. of SH at 8ft tall on an obelisk. So you might think about whether these two should be placed together given given their proportional differences. If you'd still like to pursue planting them together, if you have the 2015 DA U. S. catalog, on page 95 there's a garden design plan showing BB planted next to The Mayflower (a pink rose) together. It's a matter of personal taste but I think the DA folks would approve of what you'd like to do in terms of colors. Good luck! Ann...See Morelibrarian_gardner_8b_pnw
