Is There Winter Interest, Among Your Old-Fashioned Roses?
Comments (26)I hibernate like my roses and watch the garden from a window. From my kitchen window I can see the blanda rose 'Betty Bland' with red canes next to Rosa pendulina, with its red flagonshaped hips. Other roses with hips near the house are R. moyesii, alba Suaveolens, R. stellata mirifica, the Portland rose and several rugosas. Pines, junipers, box and yew topiary add evergreen interest. The highlight of my winter garden is the round boxedged bed that looks wonderful powdered with snow while the sides are green. Close to the front door are two large box balls, mahonia, cherry laurel, Christmas roses and a clipped yew with red berries. I have put most evergreens where I can see them from inside or walking up to the house, redleaved bergenia 'Winterglow', rhododendrons, periwinkle, eight small box balls, euonymus 'Emerald'n Gold', cotoneaster 'Coral Beauty' and dwarf conifers like Picaea glauca 'Conica'....See MoreThose hidden roses among the cannas
Comments (14)Thanks! I had a lady stop by this afternoon to ask me what kind of roses they are. I told her and she said her's didn't look anything like that. She's right, they don't they are about 6 ft tall and sparse on blooms. She said they'd never been pruned and of course she didn't know anything about feeding them. As I drive down our street every 2nd or 3rd house have red KOs in their flower beds and many look terrible. KOs may be easy to take care of but they still need some care. You can't just stick them in the ground and not do anything with them....See MoreGrowing tulips among the roses
Comments (3)I admit to not watering mine...but I have awfully light sandy soil...which tulips love, but roses less so...so probably the shade does them in...but now I am thinking on it, I have had a bunch of 'Vancouver' tulips (cream) under a Harkness climber of the same colour (Perpetually Yours) which have been together for the -past 5/6 years...so perhaps I am talking rubbish (again). And of course, some tulips are more reliable than others. My roses tend to tower above almost all the underplanted stuff because I have thing for enormous ramblers...but tulips are also hanging on near the Scotch burnet roses with a much neater canopy. So yep...talking rubbish....See MoreAmong My Favorite Roses . . .
Comments (7)This one always makes me smile - there's something so delightfully exuberant yet relaxed about it. Roses that shows their stamens tend to do that to me, for some reason. Love the long sepals and those happily 'ragged' blooms too. It reminds me somewhat of Scharlachglut/ Scarlet Fire/ Scarlet Glow (Kordes 1952), which I'm also very fond of, at least in habit/size and blooms varying from deep pink to red, though single of course. It looks as if it can be kept pruned down for a bushier plant or left to arch or climb. Sadly I only know both these lovely shrubs through photographs. Do you find your GdR sets decent hips in your climate?...See Morefarmerray
