Update on Sum and Substance and a few others
Comments (17)Mocc, I have been wanting to get a Full Moon but haven't found any for sale around here. Maybe I will have to order one online. I really love the pictures I have seen of that one. I want a yellow/orange colored one really bad! I like your Short Fat Fanny too! Great name for it! Dmkelly, I say go for it! The first JM that I planted was a really small noid red one that I bought for less than $10 and not long after it was planted my new puppy chewed it to a twig. I grew back and then the next year, I accidentally broke it off again while cleaning out the garden. The poor little thing perservered and now 17 years later is a beautiful tree. I thought for sure it was a goner! Linda...See MoreHosta Loss in Twin Cities - Strange Spring?
Comments (4)Thanks for the follow up everyone! There are a couple things I can definitely rule out: Weedkiller (I have a dog with cancer so don't use chemicals) Water: Watered heavily last fall I have 1 of the 3 Montanas that is fine (they were planted together Kabitan; Little bits here & there So I will dig the one area that I had the greatest loss and see if I can "see" what is happening. A couple years ago I had a vole (not a mole like I incorrectly mentioned) and he ate my "Fried Green Tomatoes" hosta PS. My Salutes, Frances Williams, Crossa Regals, Striptease (I am a hosta freak), Elvis Lives, Sum & Substance and all the 25+ others are doing great. Some seem a little thin and that could be the dry fall/winter. But all the ones I lost were in a good amount of shade, even after the leaves went down. I am thinking to that since I can't use chemicals, my yard is probably a haven for underground critters! Fortunately for me, we have a red tail hawk and a couple eagles (along with a red fox) that have taken out every rabbit in the area :) I will let you know what I find when I dig (or don't find!) & thanks!...See MoreAnyone uncovering yet?
Comments (3)Thanks, Mehearty and EJR2005! Well I did uncover a couple of the new ones I got last year from Aldi's, not knowing whether they would even come back at all. They look good--albeit pale and spindly and tender. I left the others alone, and will wait a bit longer. We aren't scheduled to have any of this cold weather others around us are getting....don't know why, but am grateful! I am a beginning hosta collector, and some of mine are up 5-6 inches and leafing out already. I don't think I could possibly find enough containers, sheets, etc. to cover all those plants, so if it does turn off cold, I'll have some losses. Fingers still crossed.... Comments (12)Thank you all so much for your nice comments. Very few people actually see (or appreciate) my garden, so it's a great pleasure to share it here with other passionate gardeners. I'll try to see if I have a picture that shows more of the rock. It's about 30 feet across and the whole structure, which tapers to a lower height and is less solid rock and more decomposed granite, is about 150 feet long. Ingrid...See Morebart bart
