Timing of getting sod out.
Comments (3)I'm in Portland, too, and planning on another raised bed. This time, we're not going to tear out the sod--we're covering the grass with cardboard & then putting soil/compost on top. Taking out the sod this time of year will be a muddy mess, and you will end up removing a lot of soil with it. I've found sod removal easier (and less messy--you can just shake the dirt out) at the end of summer....See MoreFirst-time cherry tree pruner...
Comments (9)That tree is growing in crowded quarters and it will cause you problems in the future. I'd rather recommend a rather large potted plant for your location, some folks here may recommend otherwise. If you do keep and prune that tree, you need to select a single leader(preferably one pointing away from the house) and cut back all of the other top cluster of codominates. Then you can gradually remove a couple of them the following year. Also there's a codominate comming off the bottom that will need to be thinned back. Keep the branches that are aiming toward the house short and therefore of low vigor and small caliper so they can be removed later on. Some branches will need to be removed since radially they are very crowded. Also, you will need to monitor and thin back branches periodically to keep them from becomming codominate. I also can not see the root flare. Good luck with whatever your choice!...See MoreCleaning out old clematis vines
Comments (2)Jackmanii is a type III clematis and should be cut back to within a couple inches of the ground every year or it will develop old thick wood that will eventually be devoid of leaves and all your flowers will be on the top of the plant since it blooms on new wood. The President is a type II clematis but in my zone 7a garden, I treat it as a type III clematis as well since my growing season is long enough that it just blooms later in the season than it would if I didn't prune it. I can even prune it back after its first flush of flowers and get another flush in the fall. In your zone 9 garden, you have an even longer growing season than I do so you can easily treat both of your clematis as type IIIs and whack them back severely and still get blooms. I think it is time to get the pruners out and give those plants a serious haircut. They should come back out within short order. I would treat them similarly each late winter/early spring....See MoreGet those sweaters out, its almost SOUP time!
Comments (15)ogrose, I am retired. :) but I look after my grand kids until they're old enough to fend for themselves at preschool, and fill in sometimes when parent's schedules don't cooperate. As soon as the last one is about 2-3yo I'll have my time to myself again. About your brug, Carrie could better answer but I don't think you should plant it this late. But if you do, you'll have to cut it back in a month (just ahead of the first freeze) and root the cutting just in case the one you planted doesn't make it. I think all the brugs got 'something' this year. It was so hot and dry....See Morebengz6westmd
