my first spring bulb container garden in zone 6
Comments (3)For the first time this fall i've planted bulbs in my pots to have bloom for the spring. I usually plant in the ground so I don't have any experience with how the winter will be on the bulbs in the pots. Do you have to protect the pots somehow so they don't freeze??? I'm in Michigan and it gets really cold here. I have planted the bulbs in a 20" in diameter pot, and have put leaves on top along with landscape fabric to hold the leaves in. I have also grouped the 3 pots together in the corner of my house. Hopefully this will be enough to keep them alive for the spring. Any suggestions would be appreciated....See MoreOT: Late spring blooms in zone 6/7
Comments (25)Your gardens are beautiful and perfectly manicured! Red Charm looks wonderful....if I had room for another peony, I think that's one I'd like. Some of the smaller purple alliums grown here, but I love the idea of five feet tall ones! I'm also a big fan of heucheras. This year was the first year that I had all return (knock on wood) as I've lost one or two most years. I have a small collection. They've been spectacular this spring...especially one called Georgia Peach. Well, having said that, I couldn't pick a favorite. Interestingly, I grow mine with epimediums, so it sounds like in more shade than you do. Day before yesterday, I planted two new ones, Plum Royale and Pinot Gris. I'm trying them in areas with a bit more sun. Snow Angel was problematic for me, but I'm hoping this time (the third go round), I've figured it out. It overwintered in a pot last year...in a more sunny area, so it is planted with more sun than most. The mock oranges look to be blooming soon here...can't wait for their fragrance now that the daphnes are pretty much done. Thanks for posting such lovely pictures...especially on a rainy day....See MoreBlooms zone 6/7
Comments (17)Floota, You have, as always gorgeous blooms beautifully photographed. There are so many to satisfy those of us who love purples and reds. Toucan Sam is really, really lucious. I am very fond of Lucky Streak and the pictures of Amethyst Tears and Alechymist are beautifully showcased. I love Karol Emmerich's and your are a real ad for them, and Michael Davisson is beautiful! Altogether a very satisfying visual vist to your garden. kay...See MoreWhat was in bloom in your zone 6 around April 23rd?
Comments (14)Nearly a month later and all the hydrangeas are in bloom. I'm going to experiment with drying them (I've been successful before) & dying a few to achieve the purple-blue color dd loves. I'll know in a month or two if I've been successful, plenty of time to make other plans. I was not planing on doing all the tables and arrangements myself, though there will only be about 12 tables. If I could slip a few narcissis and (with some luck) very early tulips in the arrangements...and perhaps a single hydrangea I'd be very happy. I don't think the financial savings would be significant but the pleasure would be. She loves the color of the blue twist and shout hydrangea, but I have absolutely no idea how it dries. I have 4 mature annabelles, so lots of mopheads to experiment with...also limelight (floppy) a few paniculatas that might work. There is a local florist who is willing to work with clients who want to use flowers from their own gardens. Thanks for your ideas....See Moreforever_a_newbie_VA8
