Repairing severe hail damage--best insulation under siding?
Comments (2)If you are replacing the siding and windows then adding at least 1" of continuous rigid foam on the outside is very worthwhile. The continuous layer stops thermal bridging across the framing (up to 20% of the wall area), and if taped properly eliminates air transfer. On the old part of our house we did 2" of rigid foam outside and blown in cellulose in the 2x4 walls. It made a remarkable difference in comfort and energy use. Spray foam would have been even better, but a lot more expensive. In new England houses getting a deep energy retrofit commonly add 4" of rigid foam on the exterior, that requires a carpenter with some skill and patience to attach the exterior sheathing to the studs. Our addition has 4" of closed cell spray foam in 2x6 walls with 1" of exterior rigid foam. It makes it very quiet inside!...See MoreAdvice on restoration of wood siding that was hidden under aluminum

Re scaffolding, may I piggy back ont his thread to ask - how much of an ordeal is it erecting and moving it? I have a 1 1/2 story and am trying to decide whether to attempt scaffolding or get/borrow a taller extension ladder.. I think the ladder might be a lot of hassle having to move it so much and futz with it each time....See MoreWhat to put under vinyl siding?
Comments (2)The vinyl should go over sheathing (like OSB or plywood) and a waterproofing membrane like building wrap. Houses normally have both of those things under any siding... so if that's the case then you're already good to go. I'm not familiar with the felt but maybe that's acting as the membrane layer? Just make sure you use appropriate vinyl siding nails and hit the studs. Don't nail them too tight (leave 1/16" wiggle room between nail head and nailer strip) -- you want to allow for expansion and contraction with temperature and humidity changes....See MoreAcoustic board under siding?
Comments (13)Hey David! Thanks for sharing! I have on vinyl siding, drywall, 4” walls, a 4” fence, some trees and new triple pane windows and the noise is just obnoxious. i met with an architect who told me I could pump in foam insulation, that is likely my next route. Ive also considered putting in another layer of drywall on the inside that is the special sound blocking. I would think their recommendation to install the foam board outside would be about the same as the extra layer of drywall on the inside. Before I invest thousands I’d like to find out what kinds of things may work best. I also got a quote on a window insert. The guy said they wouldn’t do much since I already have triple pane. You’re on the right track of doing it while you’re getting new siding, wish I would’ve done that! I definitely wouldve looked into what you’re doing or the foam. Let me know how it ends for you! Hopefully with more peace and quiet. I’ll keep you posted on what ends up happening here! thanks again!...See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
