Kitchen ceiling height/look of cabinets etc
Comments (10)Borngrace, your situation sounds very similar to ours. Our addition only has 8ft ceilings, except for the game room which has vaulted ceilings that follow the roof line and the kitchen which has 7'7" ceilings due to a 2nd floor bath over one end of it. The neighboring rooms (circa 1775 and 1790) have 7'3" and 8ft ceilings. If our design had permitted a non-flat ceiling in the kitchen we would have let the roof rafters determine the ceiling height, because that wouldn't have seemed inappropriate in an historic sense, especially in a "utility" room like a kitchen. I agree that having a flat ceiling jump up in height significantly compared to the surrounding rooms could be jarring. How is the 20 x 23 space laid out? If it's just one big open space, then 8ft ceilings might feel low, though I have a hard time imagining 9ft feeling low. If it's visually divided into 2 or more areas, 8ft ceilings will probably feel plenty high in the context of your house. Does your architect have a lot of experience in additions to historic houses? If you're wanting the kitchen to feel like a room that could have always been there and just happens to work out nicely for modern living, there will be more than just the ceiling height that will impact that. The cabinets themselves can be designed to look nice with any ceiling height, but there's a limit to what they can do to minimize the soaring feeling of a 12ft ceiling when you step in from a room with a 7ft ceiling....See MoreHelp!!! Comments (11)Thanks everyone. I actually feel somewhat the same as you do, Morgne, and could live without the molding...IF we hadn't been dumb and not painted the walls behind where the cabinets were going! I can see white wall above the cabinets (see above burgundy cabs)...and color infringing on it in places (see above microwave). Not sure I could ever reach back in to do a decent job. :-(...See MoreHELP!! Change ceiling height or vault??
Comments (34)Though a lot has to do with personal taste, I'd vote for different ceiling heights to suit the home's design, architecture, roof style and region of contruction. While architecting our home with hip roofs with, we (I) had crazy ideas about superhigh ceilings for our large home, currently under construction, however decided to have a blend of ceiling heights for entryway, bedrooms, living areas and even garages, which made more sense and glad we did. We used a blend of 9, 10, 12 and 16' ceilings with 16' for the two rear garages only. Instead of using ceiling heights which do nothing for the physical space, we opted for very open spaces, very wide hallways and corridors which can be experienced and felt every day....See MoreWeird Half Bath with Half-a-Ceiling!! Comments (13)Yes, toilet and sink can remain where they are. I would have one hanging hand towel space near the sink - disposable towels are great if you have a large number of people over at once, but for one or two at a time, it's not so luxurious, and rather wasteful if you are dashing in there yourself when home alone. Under the overhang... a cabinet to store supplies, including extra TP. Find an attractive knick knack for atop. Either art or wallpaper on the wall behind the toilet- or perhaps through the entire room (edit, wallpaper that is...) Paint or paper the slope the same as the wall it is on. If you are apt to have guests who are older, or may have physical limitations, consider a comfort height toilet. It would probably be worth changing out the tile, but you can always use the right rug for now....See MoreDiana Bier Interiors, LLC
